There's lots of lesbian riot grrls and the like and not a comparable amount of gay guys into hardcore. After all most gay guys would prefer opera.

I have no idea when or why they came up with that ridiculous name, but it's just a festival for BRTD's music. *sigh*

It started in 2004 and it was a deliberately silly name because so many other fests had boring and/or pretentious names basically as a joke and to get the point across that it wasn't very serious. It kind of started as a sort of a big meetup for bands from all around the country that had played together on tour or whatnot, more for the bands organizers than those in attendance. Of course those were also predominately male which might have something to do with it.

Part of the joke. When people say punk is about shocking people they really mean it's about shocking people who aren't in on it or aware, which is clearly the case here.
