both politically, racially, and economically? I think San Bernardino County, CA is a good choice. Politically its a swing county and there's a mix of both democrats and republicans. You could draw an R+10 district (Lewis' district), but you could also draw a D+13 district (Baca's district). Its also a racially diverse county. You can find a lot of MS 13s in areas like San Bernardino proper and Rialo, a lot of sprawl and stucco houses in Redlands or Rancho Cucamonga, and a lot of meth smoking rednecks in the ruraL areas of the county.

I'll nominate Tarrant County, Texas today for USA 2020... it fits demographically but Hispanic population is significantly higher.

Conversely, Douglas County, Nebraska well represents the USA of ten years ago.

tarrant county is too republican to be a microcosm.

Staten Island seems to be a decent candidate.

Very statistically similar to the United States as a whole-

USA: 64% white, 16% hispanic, 12% black, 5% asian
Staten: 64% white, 17% hispanic, 9% black, 7% asian

USA: 80.4% have high school diploma, 24.4% have bachelor's or higher
Staten: 82.6% have high school diploma, 23.2% have bachelor's or higher

Percent below poverty level: 13.2% in USA, 10.3% in Staten
Per capita income: $21,587 for USA, $23,905   for Staten

Politically, it's generally pretty close to the national average as well, plus or minus a few percentage points.

The ethnic breakdown within the whites is way off, though, and that matters nearly as much as the racial divisions. (Staten Island is of course heavily Italian with nary a German ancestor to be found.)

SBD county has a similar racial breakdown to Los Angeles County fwiw. I don't see how that closely resembles the country. Arapahoe County isn't a bad candidate imho.

Hillsboro NH seems like a good one only it’s weird with its western rural areas being deep blue and it’s eastern suburbs being deep red with two largeish light blue cities

Probably one of the Chicago collar counties. I believe the Chicago metro area is the most demographically similar to the country as a whole of the major metros.

As a state IL is quite close to the national averages in terms of race, age, and sex. Within IL, Will is probably the best match to US demographics.
