Since Gates is almost certain to retire soon, who, do you think, would be his successor?

Well, let's take a guess!

Michele Flournoy has been regarded as the frontrunner to replace Gates for some time now, though there are several other options if it's not her: Richard Danzig, Ray Mabus, John Hamre, Jack Reed.

It would be nice to get a Democrat in that position for the first time in decades.

Who would Chafee appoint to the Senate if Jack Reed were chosen?

As the forum's resident Chafee-expert [don't ask, but it's 100% true]: It's hard to say.  He's not really a hard-set fellow.  Ideologically he's closer to the Democrats, but personally he feels more affection for liberal and moderate Republicans.

If Reed were to suddenly resign, I could see Chafee appointing someone like Scott Avedisian, the current Warwick mayor, or another similar moderate Republican or a literal Independent like himself.  If Reed were to negotiate first, it could be almost anyone but Cicilline or Caprio.

I have a hard time seeing Chafee appointing a progressive Democrat unless it's negotiated beforehand that he will.

edit: I should also add that Chafee is not a stranger to the concept of nepotism.  So an obscure personal friendship could end up winning the day

Appointing Avedisian might be a sign that Chafee does not intend to run for a second term, since replacing a D with an R would burn some badly needed bridges with liberals.

Oh yes, the last was William Perry (until 1997), since Cohen was a cross-party appointment.

By the way, when Clinton was replacing Aspin, John Warner was seriously considered by the administration.

Maybe he'll appoint a horse.

Well, there's a precedent for that.

No, but seriously, if Jim Webb may be convinced not to leave politics, he would be "kewl".

There's no chance that Obama is going to pick yet another Republican as Secretary of Defense.  Dems want one of their own in that position finally, after 14 straight years of Republicans in the position.

Exactly. Of course this is Obama that we're talking about, so he'll probably make another terrible choice.

I think this is Obama's best choice--Webb is not the most liberal guy around, but I think he technically switched parties over the Iraq war (which would probably mollify Liberals), has a very solid military background, and would be an excellent fall guy if Obama needs a more clean break from his current foreign policy if Libya goes South.

Webb has been way too critical of Obama's foreign policy to be a viable pick. He's going to want a yes-man (or at least someone who doesn't have a record of statements in opposition to the administration).

Yes.  He will not be eligible to be Secretary of Defense until 11 June 2013, the 10th anniversary of his retirement from the military.

I still say it's Hillary Clinton. Sure, she said that she's going to retire after finishing her term as SoS but then again she also said back in November 2008 that she was interested only in serving as a senator.

Leon Panetta is now the leading candidate, with Petraeus to fill his seat at the CIA.

"An administration official" says that Panetta, Reed, and Mabus now appear to be the leading candidates, with Flournoy as a dark horse:

Panetta appears to be the frontrunner.
