Let's say Wallace was not shot, instead Scoop Jackson was instead. Wallace finishes third to McGovern, and both Humphrey and Wallace refuses to endorse him. Wallace decides to run for the American Independent party with John Schmitz as his VP.

Nixon wins the nomination easily, and chooses George Bush as his new vp.

What happens on election day and why?

Wallace carries Alabama, Mississippi, SC, Louisiana and maybe Georgia and arkansas. Nixon carries everything else minus Mass. and DC (mcgovern states, like in RL)

I can actually see Wallace possible winning the whole south minus Virginia and Tennessee. That's the best case:

Nixon contests with Wallace in the South, and McGovern comes close but fails in the Upper Midwest.
