I hereby declare the SDP's office building here on Independence Square in St. Mark's to be opened.

EDIT: How sure are we that the party's name will be SDP? If anyone has a better idea, now's the time.

SDP is a good, generic name that gets the point across. While it may not be as interesting as some other potential names, I think it's important that the main center-left party has a straight-to-the point name that doesn't have the potential to alienate its base. We wouldn't want to be called a "Front," for instance.

I always liked 'SDLP' actually. Or 'SDPA' or something along those lines. But just SDP indeed has a lot of merits, yes.

The trouble with 'SDP' is... well... yeah.

But there's nothing wrong with being known as Social Democrats, so how about we just add another letter somewhere?

Well, if you'd like to be known as Social Democrats, but not as the SDP, we could go for something like USD (Union of Social Democrats) or SDA (Social Democratic Alliance).

Or how about DSP (Democratic Socialist Party)?

Personally I prefer to be a party, rather than a union or a block or something.

The problem there is that there is a difference between Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism. The SDP is meant to be a big-tent center-left party that still generally favors a capitalist system. As such, the term "Democratic Socialism" may not sit well with the more capitalist members of the party (such as Overgaard).

(in Character)... I've stumbled into the wrong room i think, Sorry to disturb, yes its Mr De Wilde...

Not to interrupt, but mr Overgaard is right, there is a difference, plus there is already a Democratic Socialist party listed... just not using that name since the Cooperatives is a mildy big tent left-enviro-agrarian outfit.

Drinks sometime chaps!? see you in the Assembly then

Ah, but then party names aren't always what they should be, as Portugal continues to demonstrate.

There isn't really. Generically the two terms mean exactly the same thing; reformist/revisionist/gradualist socialism, adhering to parliamentary norms. In certain specific contexts (namely in Britain between about 1950 and 1990) the two terms have meant something specifically different, of course, but specifics relating to another country aren't relevant to how this party is to be named.

Or you know, given our status (presumably) as the party that freed the nation from British tyranny, we could also go for something off the wall, like: (Antillian) Independence Party or Antillian National Union.

I'd still prefer some variant with Socialist, Social-Democrat,... and so on, but there are alternatives.

I'm sorry if this comes across as back-slapping, but I think we're doing very well here. We set this party up (in practice anyway) a couple of days ago and already we're having an endless debate about our identity, just like a real social democratic party!

Since I'm not a member, this might be out of order, but if I might come with a few proposals.

SDA - Social Democratic Alternative - Social Democratic Alliance

SLP/SDLP - Socialist Labour Party - Social Democratic Labour Party

SDU - Social Democratic Union - Social Democratic Unity

SPP - Socialist People's Party

SD(P)M - Social Democratic (Popular) Movement

UL(C) - United Left (Coalition)

SRP - Social Reform Party

Personally I find just SDP a bit boring. Good luck to y'all, hope you find the right name.

That's the one I think. Yes. Especially as it seems as though the party is going to have a nationalist streak with possible traces of a national liberation movement of some kind decades ago.
