In the unlikely scenario that Bachmann wins the nomination, here is my scenario for election night. Unemployment at 7.2% and declining...

7:00

The polls are closing at this hour in six states: Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia and, based on exit poll data, we are able to project two states for the President. In Virginia, a state the president turned blue for the first time in 44 years, he carries the Old Dominion state by a solid margin. And in Vermont, no surprise here, the President wins Vermont's 3 electoral votes.

Obama: 16
Bachmann: 0

7:30

The polls are closed at this hour in three more states: North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia but we have not projections in any of these three states. We do have a projection in the state of Indiana however. In Indiana, where the president won a narrow victory 4 years ago, he carries the Hoosier state's 11 electoral votes by a more comfortable margin tonight.

Obama: 27
Bachmann: 0

7:45

We now have another projection. In the state of Kentucky, not a surprise albeit closer than anticipated, Rep. Bachmann gets on the board tonight and carries the Bluegrass State's 8 electoral votes.

Obama 27:
Bachmann: 8

We still have no projections in South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina or West Virginia at this hour...

7:55

We now have a major projection. President Barack Obama will win the state of Ohio and it's 18 electoral votes as he did four years ago. With just over 5% of the precincts reporting, the President leads Ms. Bachmann 60% to 38%. Never has a Republican presidential candidate won the White House without Ohio....

Obama: 45
Bachmann: 8

8:00

At this hour the polls are closing in 15 states and the District of Columbia and we are able to project that President Obama will win 10 and Rep. Bachmann 1.

In Maine, where a Republican hasn't won since 1988, the President wins the Pine Tree state's 4 electoral votes. In New Hampshire, normally a tossup state, not this time. The President wins its 4 electoral votes. In Massachusetts, a solid Democratic state, Barack Obama captures the Bay States, 11 electoral votes. In Connecticut, where there is also a Senate race tonight, the President comfortably carries its 7 electoral votes. Moving down the coast, New Jersey, whose governor Chris Christie campaigned to deliver the states 14 electoral votes to Ms. Bachmann, it is not to be. The President is the projected winner in the state of New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, often considered a bellwether state, Barack Obama once again is the winner of 20 electoral votes. In Delaware, Joe Biden's home state, the president wins the First State's 3 electoral votes. In Maryland, another strong Democratic state, Barack Obama is the winner of 10 electoral votes. In DC, perhaps the least surprising result of the night, the President wins the District of Columbia. Moving to the midwest, the President will win his home state of Illinois, 20 electoral votes. And now the big projection of the hour: President Obama will comfortably win the state of Florida which he narrowly carried four years ago. Florida's 29 electoral votes we are able to put into the Democratic column.

The one state we are able to project for Ms. Bachmann is Oklahoma, one of the most reliably Republican states in the country. Oklahoma's 7 electoral votes go to Ms. Bachmann.

In Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee, where the polls just closed, we don't have enough information to make a projection. Additionally, we have no projections in Georgia, South Carolina and West Virginia.

With less that 1% of the precincts reporting nationwide, the President leads Ms. Bachmann 52% to 47% in the popular vote.

Obama: 166
Bachmann: 15

8:10

We now have another big projection: the state of North Carolina will go to President Obama. The Democrats had their convention in Charlotte and the Tarheel State's 15 electoral votes slide into Mr. Obama's column.

Obama: 181
Bachmann: 15

8:30

The polls have just closed in Arkansas, but we don't have enough information to make a projection. We do have a projection in the state of Georgia, however, and this is a big one. President Obama, who narrowly lost the state to John McCain 4 years ago, will flip the peach state into the Democratic column tonight. The Deep South, usually solidly Republican, is not tonight...

Obama: 197
Bachmann: 15

8:47

We now have another projection. In the state of Missouri, President Obama will win the state's 10 electoral votes which he lost by less than 4,000 votes 4 years ago. With 5% of the precincts reporting the President leads Michelle Bachmann 56% to 43%.

Obama: 207
Bachmann: 15

We still have several states where the polls have closed but we have been unable to make projections at this hour...

In Alabama, where the polls closed at 8:00, Ms. Bachmann leads the President 56% to 43% with 7% reporting, but it's too early to call...In Mississippi, look at how close it is! With 7% of the precincts reporting Ms. Bachmann leads the President 51% to 48%: too close to call. In South Carolina, ditto. With 17% reporting, the President leads Ms. Bachmann 50% to 49%. In Tennessee, with 7% reporting, Ms. Bachmann leads the President 54% to 45%: too early to call. Finally, in West Virginia, with 12% reporting Obama leads Ms. Bachmann 53% to 46%.

9:00

The polls are now closing in 15 more states and I think we might be able to make a major projection. The President's performance has been strong all evening and it is strongest now...

We have BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

President Barack Obama has been re-elected to another 4-year term! The biggest question outstanding is how big a mandate is he likely to get? Before this hour, President Obama had won 16 states and the District of Columbia for a total of 207 electoral votes. Representative Michelle Bachman won two states worth 15 electoral votes. At 9:00, more polls closed and the electoral count started to grow. Of the 15 states closing at this hour, President Obama will carry 6 states bringing his total to 281: over the 270 threshold to be elected President.

Rhode Island, Barack Obama will carry those 4 electoral votes, not a surprise. Michigan, a state with a strong union presence, delivers its 16 electoral votes to President Obama despite Governor Rick Snyder's attempts to make it competitive for Michelle Bachmann. Same for Wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes, President Obama easily wins Gov Scott Walker's state. As goes Wisconsin, so goes Minnesota, it's 10 electoral votes slide into the Obama column. New York, never really in question, gives its 29 electoral votes to Barack Obama. The big projection at this hour is New Mexico which stays blue and gives its 5 electoral votes to President Obama. Additionally, we are projecting President Obama will win 1 electoral vote in the state of Nebraska. The Cornhusker State is one of two in the country that awards its electoral votes proportionally and Barack Obama will retain the electoral vote he won in Nebraska 4 years ago.

We can also project that Michelle Bachmann will win Wyoming's 3 electoral votes, as expected.  Also, we are now able to project the state of Alabama and its 9 electoral votes to Ms. Bachmann. With 11% of the precincts reporting, Ms. Bachmann leads President Obama 55% to 44%.

Of the states that closed at this hour, we cannot make projections in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas.

Obama: 282
Bachmann: 27

Let's now look at the popular vote...with 8% of the precincts reporting nationwide, President Obama leads Michelle Bachmann 55% to 44%...

9:10

We now have another projection: in the state of West Virginia we project that President Obama will win West Virginia's 5 electoral votes. With 16% of the precincts reporting, the President leads 55% to 43%.

We are also hearing from the Bachmann camp at this hour that there won't be any concession statement until the polls are closed on the West Coast at 11 pm ET...

Obama: 291
Bachmann: 27

9:18

We are breaking into our coverage at the moment because we are able to make projections in three more states. In Colorado, President Obama is the winner of its 9 electoral votes as he was 4 years ago. Next-door to Colorado, we can project the Grand Canyon State for Barack Obama. Another 'red state' going blue tonight as Arizona slides into the Democratic column. For Michelle Bachmann we can project one state at this time. With 2% of the precincts reporting in Nebraska we can project the remaining 4 electoral votes of the Cornhusker state for Ms. Bachmann. Mr. Obama has already won the other electoral vote from Nebraska despite trailing Ms. Bachmann 46% to 53% statewide at this hour.

Obama: 311
Bachmann: 31

In the popular vote, with 11% of the precincts reporting nationally, the President leads 56% to 43%...

9:38

We have two more projections at this time in the Dakotas! President Obama will win 6 electoral votes in the Dakotas. With 6% reporting in both states, he leads Ms. Bachmann 54% to 45% in North Dakota and 56% to 43% in South Dakota. It is the first time in 48 years that either state has been won  by a Democratic candidate....

Obama: 317
Bachmann: 31

10:00

It is now 10:00 ET and the polls are closing in 4 states. Based on information we are getting at this hour, we can project three of those states. In Iowa, which has had a love-affair with Barack Obama since the 2008 Democratic primary, we can project the President will win the Hawkeye State's 6 electoral votes: fully expected. Nevada, where Latinos make up an ever-growing share of the electorate, is another big win for President Obama. He will pick up 6 electoral votes in the Silver State. And in Utah, a solid Republican state, Ms. Bachmann wins Utah's 6 electoral votes.

Obama: 329
Bachmann: 37

We still have no projections in the following 8 states where the polls are already closed at this hour: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Let's take a closer look at Texas and its bonanza of electoral votes which are still up for grabs at this hour. With 10% of the precincts reporting, the President leads Ms. Bachmann 52% to 47%, however we are not ready to make a projection one way or another.

10:19

We have another projection. In Montana we project that Barack Obama will win the Big Sky State's 3 electoral votes. Outgoing Gov. Schweitzer worked hard to deliver the state to the president and he does so tonight.

Obama: 332
Bachmann: 37

11:00

The polls are now closed in 49 states with 5 more states closing their polls at this hour. We are able to project all 5 of those states and President Obama will carry 4 of them.

In California, the largest state in the union and Democratic stronghold, President Obama will win 55 electoral votes: the largest prize of the night. In Oregon, another solid Democratic state, Barack Obama will carry the Beaver State's 7 electoral votes. Washington will also go Democratic tonight as the President carries its 12 electoral votes. In Hawaii, President Obama will carry his birth state by a large margin we are projecting. The Aloha State delivering its 4 electoral votes to its birth-son.

In Idaho, where potatoes and Republicans generally do well, Michelle Bachmann wins the Gem State's 4 electoral votes.

Obama: 410
Bachmann: 41

In the popular vote, with 35% of the precincts reporting nationwide, the President leads Michelle Bachmann 57% to 42%, or a difference of about 7 million votes...We are expecting Ms. Bachmann to address her supporters momentarily...

11:10

We are now breaking into our coverage to bring you live to Michelle Bachmann's campaign headquarters where Ms. Bachmann is about to deliver he concession statement...

"My fellow Americans while I cannot claim a personal electoral victory here tonight, I believe that the American people have greatly benefited from the experiences of this campaign. We have been able to refocus the political conversation on the real needs and aspirations of the American people and in this I take great solace tonight. A short time ago, I called President Obama conceded this election and while the ideological chasm that divides us is profound, and at times irreconcilable, we will work together to strengthen our bonds as Americans...."

11:39

We now have a major, major projection!!! For the first time since 1976, a Democrat will carry Texas. With 31% of the precincts reporting, the President lead Ms. Bachmann 52% to 47% in the Lone Star State. The landslide proportions of this victory continue to manifest themselves...in the popular vote, with 48% of the precincts reporting nationwide, Barack Obama lead Michelle Bachmann 57% to 42%...

Obama: 448
Bachmann: 41

11:50

President Obama is just stepping onto the podium at Grant Park in Chicago where he will once again address the nation as he did four years ago. Let's listen in...

"Thank you, Chicago! Today we came together as a nation and reaffirmed to our commitment to moving this country forward past the partisan divide and into a future with even greater stability and prosperity. I am honored and humbled that the American people have placed their trust in me for another 4 years in leading this great nation. A short time ago, Michelle Bachmann called me and congratulated me on being re-elected President of this country we both love. I look forward to working with her and other members of Congress from all political stripes to ensure that we maintain our promise to the American people for a greater tomorrow. We have come a great way in these past four years and I am confident we will go still further in the next four...."

12:20

A little housekeeping now as election night 2012 wraps up...the polls closed in Alaska 20 minutes ago and we still do not have a projection to make there but we do have a few other projections we were crunching during the President's speech.

In Tennessee we can project that Michelle Bachmann will carry the Volunteer State's 11 electoral votes. With 58% of the precincts reporting, Ms. Bachmann leads the President 51% to 48%. In Louisiana, we can project that President Obama will win the Bayou State's 8 electoral votes. With 39% in, the President leads 52% to 47%.

Obama: 456
Bachmann: 52

In the popular vote, with 53% of the precincts reporting, the President leads Ms. Bachmann 58% to 41%, a difference of 12 million votes...

1:39

We now have another projection. In South Carolina, President Obama will carry the Palmetto State and its 9 electoral votes. With 95% of the precincts reporting, President Obama leads Ms. Bachmann 50% to 49%.

Obama: 465
Bachmann: 52

1:50

Another Presidential projection at this late hour. Despite vigorous campaigning by Sarah Palin for the Republican ticket, Alaska will go to President Barack Obama. With 20% of the precincts reporting, the president leads 55%-44% in the Last Frontier.

Obama: 468
Bachmann: 52

5:46

Another presidential projection this morning. In the state of Mississippi, we project that President Obama will win 6 electoral votes. A huge crack in what up until yesterday was the Republican South, the Magnolia State goes to the Democratic candidate for the first time since 1976. With 99% of the precincts reporting, President Obama leads 50% to 49%.

Obama: 474
Bachmann: 52

Nov 7, 2012 8:46 PM

More than 24 hours after the polls closed in Arkansas, we can finally make a projection. Representative Michelle Bachmann will win Arkansas' 6 electoral votes as she leads the president 49% to 48% with 100% reporting.

Obama: 474
Bachmann: 58

Nov 10, 2012 10:15 AM

We have a final projection in the presidential race. President Obama will carry the state of Kansas and its 6 electoral votes. The Sunflower State will go to the Democrat for the first time in 48 years. With 100% in, the President leads 49.5% to 49%.

Obama: 480:
Bachmann: 58

In the final popular vote count:

Barack Obama/Joe Biden 58.3% 78,084,719
Michelle Bachmann/Tim Pawlenty 40.4% 54,119,166

This is like a Democrat's wet-dream.

But seriously, this is what would happen if the GOP was stupid enough to nominate Bachmann.
