And of course the Obamabots rush to defend their messiah's Heritage Foundation plan. Obamacare is an utter joke, an insult to advocates of actual health care reform (i.e. nationalization) and I hope it fails. The neoliberal cancer needs to be exterminated, even if cutting it off may hurt.

The casual sociopathy of sheltered rich kids who'll never have to worry about losing their health insurance.

It's a bit rich to be mocking the casual sociopathy of sheltered rich kids whilst promoting 15% flat tax and the most regressive tax there is (VAT/sales tax). But I'm sure that's credible and serious discussion to all the liberals on here.

Obviously Obama's health plan is better than nothing, but it's one of those remorselessly unambitious plans (Heritage Foundation guaranteed) that kill off any hopes for a real reform (or in this case, a healthcare system).

They're not the same thing, you know. -_- (And the distinction is quite relevant: An actual sales tax was way less bureaucratic - VAT basically forces any private business to become an outsourced IRS franchise on the side - and otoh was one of the most market-distorting things ever tried in the modern West; the huge trusts of the first half of the 20th century were largely caused by the fact we had sales taxes then, which means companies have a strong incentive to buy nothing, outsource nothing, and keep the entire production process of everything they deal in within the company. This had positive and negative side effects...

The one advantage of a sales or VAT tax as a main source of government revenue, of course, is that it's not nearly as easy to evade.

It should be noted that Snowstalker brags about campaigning for Obama.

I understand this might come as some surprise to the Leftist Perpetual Outrage Machine of which you're apparently a part, but I don't genuinely support replacing progressive income taxes with a flat tax, no. I'm not American - as Antonio recognised in that thread anyone remotely familiar with my "political views" would know I'm not some kind of laissez-faire psychopath and was merely making a comment about the infantile nature of a thread about "Your Tax Policy" as if we're candidates for office. A VAT is different and is good public policy, though, and calling it "the most  regressive tax" there is a poor excuse for political argument.

Snowstalker's tiresome True Leftist act is only possible because he's wealthy enough that he wouldn't be affected at all by the "collapse" of Obamacare he's hoping for, much like when he openly admitted he was looking forward to another Great Depression because it would awaken the proletariat to socialism or some such nonsense.

The idea that Real Reform is only possible as an all-or-nothing measure is one of the dumbest things that the Left believes. If Obamacare hadn't passed you wouldn't see Real Reform. You wouldn't see healthcare reform for another decade at minimum. At most the next Democratic President might try to provide health benefits for poor kids or something. Maybe.

Raising VAT to make up for the decline in revenues from income tax thanks to all the old loopholes being torn open to where, to higher earners, the income tax code looks like a fishnet stocking (and lowering the topmost brackets), without even fixing the gaps in VAT coverage that we've got, WAS the most regressive policy option to have been available to 80s-2010s governments in Europe. That's where that talking point comes from.

I hardly think my unfamiliarity with your views, and my failure to recognise something said in a dead-pan manner was satire renders me as a member of the Leftist Perpetual Outrage Machine (whatever that is - it sounds positively Barfbag-esque) - but happy to check you off the laissez-faire psychopath list and admit your criticism is no longer hypocritical.

A VAT is different and is good public policy, though, and calling it "the most  regressive tax" there is a poor excuse for political argument.

Well, only if equality isn't remotely a priority to you.

Maybe.

Or you might see the same demand for action produce a more meaningful solution than this Heritage-sponsored travesty. It's not a case of all-or-nothing, but you can't tell me implementing this healthcare act won't dampen the impetus for immediately (as in within this decade) tearing it up and creating a nationalised system, which is the real reform (much of) the Left believes in/hopes for. Without the emergency of 60+ million people priced out of coverage it's less likely that the fundamental issue - the systemic extortion from sociopathic profiteers, above delivering a healthcare service, will be addressed. This couldn't be, and isn't, a stepping stone - it's the (woefully inadequate) solution. It's to be welcomed over the existing crisis, but with the heavy-hearted realisation there'll still be no healthcare service for Americans for the foreseeable future.

This mind-numbingly stupid notion that incremental progress is somehow worse than status quo because it might weaken the call for more radical action is one of the most detestable ideological legacies of orthodox marxism, and has been proven wrong thousands of times in history.

One would think that no half-serious "progressive" would still believe this crap, but apparently there is nothing more resilient than this kind of pseudo-radical bullsh*t.

Thank you guys for reminding me why I'm not a True Leftist, and never will.

Except that there's no reason to believe that Obamacare is intended as any kind of stepping stone. If it was, it would have been designed quite differently.

Not towards a system of socialized or fairly priced medicine, no. But then most other western countries have nothing of the kind either.

Not sure if he realizes how good of a burn this was:

I get annoyed when someone's avatar isn't their correct state/country/party.

I'm that pedantic.

So you're spouting recreational outrage at those spouting recreational outrage AND at those mocking the initial recreational outrage?

Almost? What need be said to make it actually explode?

lol. It was just a figure of speech. I was basically saying what was said was so painful to logic that my mind either need to be re-examined (which many of you would agree with) or I just have a really hard time understanding it. Can someone explain it to me?

And I'm saying I want your head to actually explode. I would very much enjoy that. Please film it.

I thought your comment was implying you'd help him along - although my tongue was firmly in cheek.

It doesn't matter what his exact intentions were behind it, comments like that are vile and should have no place on this forum. What a horrible thing to say.

I agree to this to an extent. Though I have been told worse things than what was said earlier.
