Bush Rakes in Speaking Fees

Former President George W. Bush has earned about $15 million giving paid speeches since leaving office just over two years ago, iWatch News reports.

His standard speaking fee is reportedly between $100,000 and $150,000.

"Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, and Ronald Reagan also gave paid speeches. Reagan took heat for accepting $2 million for two speeches in Japan.

But Clinton took the ex-presidential lecture circuit to a new level. He earned $65 million in speaking fees from 2001 to 2009... That included $7.5 million from 36 speeches in 2009 alone."

Obviously the salary isn't the point of being president.

I make substantially more as an ex-local official than a local official, because I do consulting.

Yeah, there are mayors here in Wayne County (and not even Detroit) who make over $100,000 a year.

The title of this thread is true, just ask Jimmy Carter for a case-in-point.  He didn't have all that great of a presidency in his short 4 years in office serving primarily as a place holder between the Nixon/Ford era and the Reagan/Bush era.  He still had the daunting task of rebuilding the reputation of the office after Watergate which happened less than 3 years before he took office.  The Iranian Hostage Situation wasn't want he wanted, I'm sure.  Not to mention, the country was still trying to heal from Vietnam.  His presidency was dogged by no good situation after no good situation.  He has been a much better ex-president in the 30 years since he left office than he was in the 4 years he was in office.  He is a great humanitarian activist.  I admire him quite a bit for his post-presidential successes.  He's had a few failures every now and then the last 30 years, of course, but nobody escapes trouble completely.

Gerald Ford said on several occasions that being ex-President is better, because of both personal and financial reasons.

Neither he, nor Carter, are great examples...
