Suicide, polygamy, cheating, cloning humans, the baby out of wedlock depends, although I'm not keen on it. Call me a traditionalist. Tongue

Neither am I, but poor judgment does not imply intentionally dishonest or dangerous behavior. Maybe its wrong for the same reason that overeating is wrong or  why DUI, simple assault/battery or misdemeanor possesion is criminal- its not immoral, its just reckless and shows a lack of self control in a way that is harmful to others...even if it is not malicious.

All except cheating and the death penalty.

I would never condone wearing animal fur but I don't think I could quite classify it as morally unacceptable.

All are morally acceptable, at least some of the time.

The death penalty was the closest call for me, but I'm OK with it when there's a high degree of certainty of guilt and the crime committed was murder(s).  I do think it is overused.

Only two - Buying/wearing animal fur and Death Penalty, though I didn't see the fur option until after I had already submitted my vote.

I understand most of the positions I disagree with, but why the hell should suicide not be acceptable ?

Those people should be seeking treatment for mental illness if anything.

Well, we've gotten a lot of responses. Here are the Atlas's views, in order of moral acceptability:

Gambling: 52/59, 88%
Same-sex relationships: 49/59, 83%
Sex out of wedlock: 48/59, 81%
Embryonic stem cell research: 47/59, 80%
Having a baby out of wedlock: 45/59, 76%
Cloning animals: 43/59, 73%
Divorce: 43/59, 73%
Pornography: 42/59, 70%
Physician-assisted suicide: 42/59, 70%
Medical testing on animals: 40/59, 68%
Buying/wearing animal fur: 39/59, 66%
Abortion: 33/59, 56%
Suicide: 26/59, 44%
Cloning humans: 23/59, 40%
Polygamy: 22/59, 37%
Death penalty: 19/59, 32%
Cheating: 12/59, 20%

There is only one issue, the death penalty, which the Atlas condemns more than the nation as a whole. However, some issues receive much more tolerance at the Atlas while others are relatively close to the national figures. (Note that these are a little skewed, since issues that already were widely not condemned don't have as much room to go up, and some things that the Atlas condemned, like suicide, it still condemns much less than the entire country.)

Cloning animals: +41%
Pornography: +40%
Suicide: +29%
Cloning humans: +28%
Same-sex relationships: +27%
Polygamy: +26%
Physician-assisted suicide: +25%
Gambling: +24%
Having a baby out of wedlock: +22%
Sex out of wedlock: +21%
Embryonic stem cell research: +18%
Abortion: +15%
Medical testing on animals: +13%
Cheating: +13%
Buying/wearing animal fur: +10%
Divorce: +4%
Death penalty: -33%

So, letting someone commit suicide is immoral. But why blaming the guy who commits suicide ?

It should be noted that Gallup polls the public in at least four other countries--Canada, the U.K., Germany, and France--about these same issues (although I'm not sure if they do it every year like in the U.S.).  It's very interesting to compare the responses.  In general, the other countries follow the same pattern as the Atlas Forum--more conservative on the death penalty but more liberal on everything else.

After the U.S., Canada is the most conservative on the whole, followed by Britain and then Germany, with France being the most liberal.  Some of the differences are quite dramatic.  For example, in 2008 62% of Americans said the death penalty was morally acceptable, but only 22% of Germans did.  Conversely, only 7% of Americans said extramarital affairs were morally acceptable (the same as in the 2011 poll), but 35% of Germans (and 47% of the French) said they were.

Not all of the issues were asked about in the 2008 polls that are included in the 2011 poll of Americans Verily cited and the Atlas poll conducted here, but many were.  Also, the Gallup polls I'm referring to measured the attitudes of Muslims in the various countries and compared them with the publics as a whole.

I haven't posted enough to be allowed to post links, but you can find the polls I'm talking about by googling "Religious Americans, European Muslims: Common Ground," "Common Ground for Europeans and Muslims among them," and "Moral Issues Divide Westerners from Muslims in the West."

Since Verily tabulated the results of the poll, a few more people have voted.  Here are the latest results (only a little different than before, but the acceptability rating of most things has risen slightly):

Gambling: 59/66, 89%
Same-sex relationships: 55/66, 83%
Sex out of wedlock: 55/66, 83%
Embryonic stem cell research: 52/66, 79%
Having a baby out of wedlock: 51/66, 77%
Divorce: 49/66, 74%
Pornography: 49/66, 74%
Cloning animals: 48/66, 73%
Physician-assisted suicide: 48/66, 73%
Buying/wearing animal fur: 44/66, 67%
Medical Testing on Animals: 43/66, 65%
Abortion: 38/66, 58%
Suicide (not-including physician assisted): 32/66, 48%
Cloning humans: 28/66, 42%
Polygamy: 27/66, 41%
Death Penalty: 22/66, 33%
Cheating: 14/66, 21%

I'll edit these if the results change later.
