He still comments all his 1/3 ultra right-wing, 1/3 anti-obama, 1/3 conspiracy theories to WalterMitty's facebook. Soooo, there's that.

Unfortunately, his assurances to us that the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery and slavery had nothing to do with racism and racism was not more prevalent in the South were shown all to be lies when the election of Barack Obama drove him off the cliff of insanity.

He's one of those people who "leaves" and then comes back, although he's done it quite a few times. I'm sure he'll be back, and there's a good chance he's reading this thread even.

Well, he was fond of pointing out that there were free blacks and even black slaveowners in the American South.  (Which is a great example of missing the point)

Well, it is unfair to reduce the cause of the War to slavery, as a lot of people do.

Well of course it is Inks.  In fact I have in the past said that the South's attack on Fort Sumter was the most direct cause of the Civil War.  Reducing the Northern's involvement to the goal of ending slavery is just historically dishonest and completely misses the original reasons a) to get back at the South for Fort Sumter and as a direct result leading to b) restoring the Union.  While there were those northerners who did seek an end to slavery, found the institution of slavery abhorrent and inhuman, men like Lincoln, who held most of the power, were concerned with the restoration of the Union: whether slavery still existed or not.  Later on, Lincoln's view would gradually change as the realization that the Civil War would inevitably become a "total war".
However, for the South the legal status of Slavery was right at the heart of their reason to secede from the Union.  Sure, you could argue that the protectionist policies favored by many Republicans was also a cause for concern for the southern agrarian elites but passages like this:

Makes me doubt that slavery wasn't a big issue for the South.  Also, the Cornerstone Speech.

So yes, it is true that the Civil War wasn't waged exclusively for the purpose of freeing the slaves, or that it was the "War to End Slavery", but it still played a pretty significant role in the war.  And yes one could argue that Northerners weren't saints and had a knack for nativism back in the mid 1800's, but I don't see how that's worse than slavery.  Sure, it would've sucked looking for a job with insanely low wages and see a few places with signs up that said "No Irish Need Apply" (which from what I've heard was quite exaggerated) but hey it beats working all day out in the blasting sun for no wages and being considered "property".  But hey, that's just me.

Yeah and most of those slaves ancestors were sold by black Africans.
Hell, the Spanish tried to use Native American slaves in parts of "New Spain" and the English even used friggin Irish slaves in the West Indies.
Slavery had more to do with it than merely race, it was concerned with outright dehumanization for the sake of cheap profit.  Thus why it deserves to be so despised.

You know what they say about assumptions......

He's left the forum for a while, and I don't really see him  coming back anytime soon. Besides that, this time of year we're busy with work, school and family.

He'll be back.... probably. A lot of people don't post when nothing important is happening. I didn't read the forum in 09, because I just didn't care. Even people with 10k posts probably need a break now and then.

Is anyone ever really "gone for good" from here (at least as far as the major posters go)? Maybe Gabu but other than that...

I'd be cool with States coming back. I hope Phil never returns but sadly we all know that that won't be the case.
