Even if it did make sense, I think this was the nail in the coffin. The Bush campaign played it to death. I think it proves that in order to be a successfull canidate, you must speak in plain terms.

I think it made Kerry look like he made his decisions on the war based on his own political fortunes, rather than on what was in the best interests of the country. He voted for the war itself when he thought he needed to appear tough. He needed to appear to be anti-war when facing Dean so he voted against the $87 B. I think this was devastating.

The way he explained it certainly didn't help. His explanation highlighted what a non-entity he is in the U.S. Senate. If the $87 B bill was so bad, where was your alternative, Senator?
