The title of this thread is true, just ask Jimmy Carter for a case-in-point.  He didn't have all that great of a presidency in his short 4 years in office serving primarily as a place holder between the Nixon/Ford era and the Reagan/Bush era.  He still had the daunting task of rebuilding the reputation of the office after Watergate which happened less than 3 years before he took office.  The Iranian Hostage Situation wasn't want he wanted, I'm sure.  Not to mention, the country was still trying to heal from Vietnam.  His presidency was dogged by no good situation after no good situation.  He has been a much better ex-president in the 30 years since he left office than he was in the 4 years he was in office.  He is a great humanitarian activist.  I admire him quite a bit for his post-presidential successes.  He's had a few failures every now and then the last 30 years, of course, but nobody escapes trouble completely.
