Yes

It's funny how all the libs always clattering on about the right to privacy have no problem with government knowing how much you make, what you spend your money on, what your job is, etc.

Personal freedom and economic freedom are distinctly different things.

I thought "freedom" meant "freedom." Whatever that means.

Economic freedom is a wholly different beast. Much more complicated, and inter-connected. Matters in that realm affect others in a multitude of ways, and limits on it are acceptable (and required) in a civilized society.

Hardly comparable to bedroom activities.

How are 'social issues' (however you define that) any different? Certainly there's an economic impact from issues like gambling, prostitution, drugs/alcohol, guns, abortion (either perspective you take), euthanasia, immigration, censorship, etc. And obviously the example I listed is somewhat invasive and a form of social engineering, particularly when tax breaks are involved.

I would just like to point out that income tax is one of the unfairest taxes there is.  The nature of income tax makes it very easy to evade.  Do you think all those billionaire Wall Street bankers pay taxes?  NO!!!  Those who are rich enough just hire a good lawyer and they walk away paying the bare minimum in taxes.  Also, income can be moved around and under-reported--meaning that the rich have less taxable income than the working class, represented as a proportion of their total income.  This is incredibly unfair to the middle and lower classes.

A national retail sales tax rate of about 25% would solve everything.  It is more fair because it is impossible to evade and hits those who spend the most (the rich) the hardest.

The richs spend less proportionally to their income.

The only reason that is is because the gov't takes away one-fourth to one-third of most middle class people's paychecks, whereas the rich get to see most of their paycheck.

If middle class Americans actually got to see (and thus spend) ALL of their paycheck, this discrepancy would largely disappear.

Especially if they're like Warren Buffet and get their money in untaxed dividends and through other budget trickery. I wouldn't mind giving him a nice, patriotic 90% tax rate to pay for those bail outs his friend Charlie said were so necessary. It's only fair right?
