Every law should expire after ten years, and have to be repassed by the legislature.

Point: keep the law simple, kill off stupid stuff like https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=11279.0

Good idea in principle, but given the monumental amount of time that would take to repass every single good law, it's not terribly practical.

Good when applied to the larger governmental bodies, like the federal government and some state governments. Good laws would continue to be passed, and unpopular ones would not. It would also help to limit the growth of government by keeping them busy. It would also motivate to give more power to the states, who could take the workload off of the federal government.

Not quite as good applied to local government.

I think when you assign more duties to the federal government, it grows in size in order to keep up.

Also possible. Could go both ways. Really depends on how things go I guess.

I am constantly amazed by poll results like these.

Do people vote, read the topic, and then decide they were wrong or something?

It's an example of a worthy cause but a bad way to fix it.  Unfortunately there probably isn't a good way to fix it.

Its a problematic idea; There are ways to fix it.

I would suggest that laws are allowed permenantly onto the statute book if passed by a two-thirds majority in the first place. If there came a need to repeal these laws, this could be done in the usual fashion.

e.g. I'm pretty sure we can all agree that murder should be against the law - there's no need to repass it every ten years.

Also, there is a hell of a lot in the US Code that is simply points of administration that really doesn't need to get repassed every ten years. There's a lot on the statute books that needs to be there; Clogging up debate time every ten years with it is worthless.

I think there should be a personal exception for me.
I'm fine with that being valid for only ten years. Smiley

I like the two thirds idea, but I think it should have to be introduced as permanent legislation in order to do that. Just the fact that it was passed by a two thirds majority shouldn't make it permanent; legislators shouldn't have to "strategically" vote on a bill to keep it from being permanent if they think it should only last 10 years.
