Mr. President, fellow Senators.

I offered this amendment because during the recent Senate elections, which were held during Eastern weekend, turnout was dreadfully low. Undoubtedly thanks to the timing.

Hence, I think it would be wiser to not have any elections during such period.

Yeah, makes sense. Does however Atlasia have official holidays ? Otherwise, these have to be specified.

I guess it won't be hard to assume Atlasia have things like Easter and Christmas, etc.

Hm... looks like we have to put some specifics.

Can't we just assume Atlasian holidays are equivalent to that of the "real" world, or is such meta-legislation not allowed? Wink

Well, I'm surely talking about such RL periods, like Easter, Christmas, which are limiting online activity, which is very bad for elections.

Would you help me put it into a writing? Smiley

Don't we already have this for Christmas?

I have no idea. But if so, Easter should fall under this as well. The same I'd say for such holidays like July 4 etc...

"Any kind" of holiday seems kind of broad. There are technically lots of Holidays. I would prefer it specify which holidays are affected.

And what I meant concerning Christmas, is that December elections are held on the second Friday (as opposed to the penultimate Friday like all other elections) specifically to avoid Christmas already, so we needn't concern ourselves with that particular Holiday.

There's probably some sort of Holiday almost every weekend, so this is kind of vague.

I'd say Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Memorial Day, and Labor Day are all definites.

You're right.

Hence, I offer following amendment:

- Federal elections shall not be held during any kind of holiday Friday and weekend.
- Those holidays are specified to be Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day and Labor Day
- In case that constitution is setting election for holiday Friday and weekend, federal election shall be held a week earlier, than originally mandated date

We might allow holidays for elections in the constitution, but leave the specifics up to statute.  That way changing which holidays are included is easier.

I think that would work. I think citizens would be okay with giving the Senate this ability.

Strange thought I did this yesterday.

Senators have 24 hours to object to this amendment from the honerable gentleman, Mr. Kalwejt.

Holding the election a week earlier might be difficult with special elections. I might add, a special election is the only way a federal election could possibly coincide with Christmas anyway. The latest dates that the regularly-scheduled December elections can fall on are December 15-17.

Do we have evidence that historically there are less voters when an election falls on a Holiday weekend?

If there are less than 6 weeks left of an at-large term, then the party gets to fill the vacancy. So it's pretty unlikely that would happen (it would have to be an independent resigning, or require the party to fail to appoint a replacement).

Looking over the list, Easter is the only one of those days that could have a regular election fall on it anyway, so it seems to me that this amendment would principally be addressing special elections anyway. Of those holidays, a vacancy before Memorial Day or Labor Day would be the only ones that would likely mandate a special election.

Nothing to add from my humble side, Lord Yankee.
