RALEIGH, North Carolina – A federal grand jury has indicted two-time presidential candidate John Edwards over massive sums of money spent to keep his mistress in hiding during the peak of his 2008 campaign for the White House.

The case of USA v. Johnny Reid Edwards contains six counts, including conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements. The indictment was returned in the Middle District of North Carolina Friday.

Edwards turned himself in at the courthouse.  My guess is that the judge will set bail, which he will be able to make - so he won't actually go to jail unless convicted.

The most surprising thing about this was finding out that his first name is actually "Johnny".

Part of me regrets that this man has never been elected president. It would certainly have been entertaining... fancy that, a cross between the Nixon and Clinton impeachments or something. Someone should write an alternate timeline on this (if it hasn't been done already?).

You may be right, man. I know what reservoir of good will I had for him disappeared when I read Game Change.

A shame. By many accounts he genuinely changed from being a real and likable guy after getting the 2004 VP nod.

So what are the odds that Edwards actually gets convicted? Ted Stevens got off due to incompetence on the part of the prosecution, and they didn't do much better with Blagojevich.

I doubt these prosecutors are as incompetent.......but I'd say little to none to a full blown conviction.......because he'll take a plea bargain.

We'll soon see.
