For purposes of polls, I think we should establish ideas on who the Generic Democrat and Republican candidates are, and they should be people who may actually run.

Republican- Mitt Romney
Democrat- Dick Durbin

Those are just wild guesses.

Chuck Hagel should be generic Republican, as there is absolutly nothing special about him.

He's a maverick though. Sort of a McCain wannabe.

Republican - Richard Lugar or perhaps George Allen

Democrat - Chuck Schumer and maybe Dick Gephardt

For the most part a lot of voters seem to think of the Democratic party as more moderate than it really is, however prior to 2004 the antics of the hard left have really hammered that perception IMHO, not broken it, the Clinton years generally are remembered positively by most voters and associated with the Democratic Party but more with Bill Clinton the individual, as that memory begins to fade it may be that voters begin to perceive the Democrats as they currently are, namely too liberal (for the most part)… that said Schumer is a pretty sharp guy from what I have heard from him and is quite frank about the problems facing the party, so its not all bad, especially as he’ll be taking on the same role that George Allen has within the GOP.

Schumer and Allen make sense.
