Is 2012 going to become the 2010 Nevada/Delaware Senate races on national level? I.e. where the GOP primary voters nominates someone unelectable over candidates who are just because they are more "conservative" etc, and they eventually go on to lose to a very vulnerable Democrat?

I'd say tis around 50/50 chance that could be the dynamic at play. For instance, Bachmann is trying to avoid that fate by trying to make it seem she's less of a flake, but there's already way to much footage of her being an extremist for her to not be hit hard by Obama. Romney (or Huntsman) would fare better and might be able to avoid this set up, but then the dynamic is pushed to discouraging republicans by claiming that Romney is to similar to Obama and thus the race doesn't matter. This is more tricky for team Obama to pull off then the Nevada/Delaware scenario which they're probably hoping for.

Obama is in far better shape than Coons or Reid. They were down 20 points generally. Obama vs generic GOP is a one point game.

This.  Obama is far better off than Coons and Reid could have hoped to be.

And there's no one candidate that could crush Obama, like Castle would've crushed Coons.

No. The stakes are far higher in a Presidential election, and the Republican Party knows this as well. You can suffer a fluke in a senate race during a midterm, but you don't give away a presidential election.
Even the Democrats during the 1980s didn't nominate Gephardt or Jesse Jackson.
