Of the last four presidents elected to two terms, one resigned in disgrace, one was impeached, and one was George W. Bush. Only Reagan left office with dignity.

If Obama gets re-elected, will he leave with any dignity?

Reagan left with Iran-Contra.

Dignity doesn't show up until 20 years after the President is out of office and people forgot all the bad stuff.

See Clinton, who is already getting whitewashed and rehabilitated, or Bush Sr., who got the "He was so much better than his son" thing throughout the second Bush Administration.  George W. Bush's rehabilitation is right around the corner.  People always want to do the "last generation's Republicans/Democrats (whichever is the opposite of you) were so much more reasonable and adult than this one's" and start crying that Howard Baker and George Mitchell and Tip O'Neill were replaced by Boehners and Pelosis and Reids and McConnells.  I bet you in twenty-five years people will say, "Back in my day, when John Boehner and Barack Obama disagreed about the deficit, you know what they did?  They went golfing together and talked it over like men.  Why can't our leaders do that?"

He'll leave with more dignity than Bush or Clinton did.  Not that that means much.

He needs to do the Nixon exit: Not resign, but be escorted on a red carpet alongside his successor to Marine 1, which would be sitting on the White House lawn. He could even do a  thumbs up, and leave. I always thought Nixon's exit, despite it being in resignation, was somehow dignified. A whole crowd gathered, some in tears, to see him leave, and as Marine 1 took off, even Gerry Ford waved good bye. A truly remarkable final image despite the year and a half struggle of Watergate.

As mentioned, Nixon didn't leave with dignity. Only Reagan did, and you hate him.

Epic win post.

Mmmm... Bill Clinton was an AWESOME president.  He did something NO other president in my lifetime did... he balanced the budget.  Where as Reagan left the country a shambles.  Not to mention Reagan sold weapons to terrorists and illegally funneled money to perpetuate a civil war.  When Reagan was president the country went through the worst trial since the Nixon impeachment.  Those days were awful.

And don't get me started about stumbling out of office with Alzheimer's.  Dignity indeed.

Talk about having the wrong focus.
