It seems really weird. It'd be like New Brunswick, New Jersey being a Republican stronghold.

Lots of African-Americans, plus many white liberal transplants there for industry, particularly music. It's quite like the Triad and Triangle in NC, except smaller.

State government, motor workers, universities. Lansing-in-the-South.
Except tha it's also a fast growing, fashionable city with huge exurbs. But these exurban Republicans live in the Republican voting exurbs, not in the city.

It's not. The metro area is, all together, solidly GOP.

Are there any major cities that are not Democratic, that are not in Oklahoma?

San Diego

It's really the suburbs that are more Republican. San Diego itself is relatively Democratic.

Republicans are good at winning the mayoral elections there though.

It's really the suburbs that are more Republican. San Diego itself is relatively Democratic.

San Diego has been a Democratic city since 1992 where the D's finally got the registration edge.

The San Diego area, including areas around it like Carlsbad, Santee, Coronado, Chula Vista, etc. is Republican however. If anything it's like the OC, but with a 58% D city that is 40% of the county's pop.

With that said, it is more GOP than normal for a big city.

Reasons?

A lot of suburban areas are included as part of the city.
There aren't that many Blacks for a big city.
It's economy is defense-driven.
It most likely economically conservative, there is an anti-tax attitude, even more than other areas.
It does a good job of attracting Whites from conservativish areas.

Colorado Springs

I think Jacksonville voted for Obama, even if he lost the county overall. Colorado Springs, I'll give you.

I was going to say Cincinnati, but it's Democratic now.

what is the most republican central urban area? it seems like no matter what every dense, downtown area of a city seems quite liberal.

While not central, would Hialeah qualify?

The city and county are consolidated. So no.

Decent sized minority population, whites tend to be more educated and less religious oriented than other parts of the south.

probably would. however Hialeah is a bit of a unique situation because of its ethnic dynamic and the fact that it still isn't the central city in the metropolitan area. I know there are any Republican central urban areas, but I'm curious to know what the least Democratic one is. Like is there a difference between the urban areas of Seattle, San Diego, Chicago, Miami, Houston, or Philadelphia or all they are similar in voting patterns?

Nashville is very Democratic for the following reasons:

--It's the state capital.  That means a lot of government workers who see a direct correlation between government funding and their paychecks.  Thus, government workers will tend to support Democrats because they will keep money coming into their departments steady.

--Nashville has a large music scene, being the country music capital of the world.  Consequently, it pulls in a lot of aspiring musicians and other "artists".  These people tend to be younger and more socially progressive, so they vote Democratic.  It that regard, Nashville is a lot like Austin, Texas.

--Nashville has a pretty sizeable African-American population.

That's exactly the reason why the Democraticness surprises me.

People who actually come to Nashville to launch their music careers are going to be pretty Democratic
