The only reason to come down hard on Halperin is that this wasn't just an instantaneous blurt, he clearly took his time to consider whether to say it.  He shouldn't be fired for insulting the President but for being dumb enough to forget rule #1 of being in front of a TV camera - the camera and microphone are always on, even when you think they aren't.

Just watched this on youtube.

Halperin was told to go for it. That there was a delay and he'd be fine. The guy in the booth hit the button and It clearly didn't work. In no way is the Halperin's fault.

That would be true if he were just another mindless hack talking head. But the guys one of those too few on cable news - an actual journalist.
