It certainly looked that way on September 12, 2001...

But throw in all of ME, CT, NY, IL, and CA

No, the country was far too polarized.

Yeah, after four years of being a non-disruptive poster on the forum, never considered a troublemaker, even someone who was liked well enough to be elected Atlasian President, Napoleon should be allowed to stay.

If the labor market was better, I could envision a Bush +8 or Bush +9 type scenario in 2004.

Either remove 9/11 from the equation or have him handle it better and you'd get that.

Not without changing real-life events.

Our numbers are dwindling. Our words are confused.
Some of them have been twisted by the enemy
until they can no longer be recognized.

Now what is wrong, or false, in what we have said?
Just some parts, or everything?
On whom can we still rely? Are we survivors, cast
away by the current? Will we be left behind,
no longer understanding anyone and being understood by no one?
Must we rely on luck?

This is what you ask. Expect
no answer but your own.

If Bin Laden had been captured right before the election, I can see this result occurring.

Bush was supported for the Iraq War, at this time.
by Fall 2004 public opinion was about evenly split, with it being more of a liability than an advantage in North New England, Pacific Northwest, and probably MN and WI.

With a bin Laden capture and an even worse Democratic campaign (possibly with a different nominee), Bush could have achieved this result.

Delaware going Republican?  No.

Why not? In 2004 there was no Joe Biden on the ticket and Bush lost the state by only 7 points (53-46), just like New Jersey.

Of course, if you're saying Bush had a lower ceiling in Delaware....

Clearly the solution is to privatize presidential elections.

So, in less than four years, get excited for the 2016 MetLife Financial U Pick The Prez Extravaganza. If you tweet a picture of your completed ballot with the hashtag #ivoted, you could win a trip for two to the inauguration or an iTunes gift card.
