Mississippi would probably go Democrat before Alabama.  But yes, if 1996 was more like 2008, it would've been possible.

Possible. Higher turnout + Buchanan-esque GOP candidate would do the trick. I still disagree about some states however.

I think TX, MS and SD were highly realistic in 1996 even.

That reminds me of an ancient thread I saw once about the results of a "How would you vote if election (Insert Election from 1960-Present) were held today"? From gathering the results, he came up with this map, at least if I remember right:



Well, not the exact shades, but still, Clinton won all but NE-03, Barely wining Utah.

Buchanan running as a second indie candidate besides Perot and the GOP still running Dole would be enough to get to the map in the OP.

Dole made a late charge in '96 once he started attacking Clinton's morals.  That probably saved the GOP in states like CO, VA, GA and maybe the Dakotas.
