Well, that would look pretty logical at the map and redneck counties would fit just well to 'bama.

(Regardless on Florida Panhandle issue, a lot of state borders look silly/sensless)

Sounds like a Democrat's dream. So yeah, not happening.

Also got to love the wiki article, it says Alabama was still under "carpetbag rule" in 1869; NPOV for sure.

It's just Alabama's shape. It's so unaesthetic!

We have lots of ugly states, it's an American tradition. Besides I always see Bart Simpson's head in mirror image when I look at the contours of MS and AL... it's like a geographical Rorschach test.

I find Idaho shape pretty amusing. Looks like already snapped waffle.

Only if we give Alaska back to the Russians.

It would have made sense once we annexed East Florida up until the State of Florida was admitted to the Union.  I don't see the point in detaching the panhandle from Florida now, unless one is going to do a wholesale reorganization of the area and recreate West Florida, including the whole Gulf Coast between the Appalachicola and Mississippi Rivers, as the 51st State.

They seem to have a lot in common for sure. More in common than the Panhandle with Miami, the Keys, Orlando, Tampa or Gainesville.

It would have given Gore a victory in 2000, so Yes.

So, while we're gerrymandering states, let's split New York into upstate and downstate, approve that California successionist plan, move Youngstown, OH to Pennsylvania and Toledo to Michigan, combine Connecticut and Rhode Island, and combine Delaware and Maryland.

There we go, that sounds fair to me.

Only if a referendum is held in those counties, allowing communities who vote against annexation to not be annexed.

With the panhandle attached, Alabama would look worse, not better.

I have better idea. We should relocate Rochambeau to the Panhandle to finally get rid of him.

I've lived there (Panama City 95-97) and many people do call it L.A. for Lower Alabama.  Culturally, it is closer to the stereotypical Alabama/deep south than it is to the stereotypical Florida (especially as you get away from the touristy beach places).  But there are rednecks all over Florida, not just the panhandle.  Sure, they tend to be a more ParrotHead kind of redneck, which is a different breed than the regular red neck.  But a red neck that prefers Jimmy Buffet over Skynyrd is still a red neck.

That said, it's retarded to want to change it...even more so for aesthetic reasons.

Unless the caoital ever gets moved to the I-4 corridor to be more centrally located, I don't think the panhandle will ever call for joining Alabama now.  Even if that were to happen , calls to become a separate State would be more prevalent.
