You might want to take another look at Milwaukee county, WI.
Great job, though.
Fixed.

Kal, would you teach me how to make one of those maps? I could really use it for my timeline...

Even knowing where Robertson County, Kentucky is, I'm hard-pressed to spot it on the map. Maybe some other color than gray?

Not hard. I use this blank version to fill:
http://www.jared-lee.com/blog/images/Misc/blank_county_map.png
(I'm then filling it in paint, which is, sadly, time-consuming stuff)

Comparison of Thurmond (1948) and Wallace (1968) performances:
Red: County carried by both Thurmond and Wallace
Orange: County carried by Thurmond, but lost by Wallace
Green: County carried by Wallace, but lost/or not contested by Thurmond
A lot of things changes in twenty years in between, like, perhaps most notably, voting rights. Also, Wallace was in ballot in significantly more states than Thurmond and in all states Thurmond carried he was an official Democratic nominee (while Wallace was an official Democratic nominee in Alabama only).

Nice work on that Wallace/Thurmond map - always interesting to compare 3rd party candidates. I knew South Carolina had less support for Wallace than a lot of Southern states, but not that he actually carried so few counties. Thurmond had a lot to do with that too I guess by his party switch and support of Nixon.
I'm not sure I realized either that Wallace took my hometown of Chesapeake VA

Here's the same idea for 2000 election.
Now, it helps to see how close 2000 was, nationwide and in a number of states.

Surprising to see that 2004 polarization was even bigger than 2008 one, in this last series of maps.
