California.
Maryland/Minnesota is tossup for #2.
Massachusetts is last (one of the seven states that still has a flat income tax).

We have a tax system that is very regressive and puts a heavy burden on the lower and middle classes. We have more billionaires and mult-millionaires  as a percentage of our population than any other state.

In addition, this is where Ronald Reagan launched his political career.

Minnesota, however, produced Hubert Humphrey, Gene McCarthy, Walter Mondale, and Paul Wellstone. It has white rural areas that vote Democratic still. It has a relatively egalitarian income distribution. It is  rather Scandinavian in more ways than just ancestry. It has a lot of union members.

I vote Minnesota.

I'm guessing Marylanders are more in favour of increased federal spending than the other states, due to its proximity to D.C. giving it large numbers of federal government employees and lobbyists. I also get the sense that the Democratic lean of MA and CA is to a reasonable extent social and cultural that I don't get to the same degree with MD (and MN isn't nearly as Democratic as the other three).

California, closely followed by Minnesota.  Then Massachusetts, closely followed by Maryland.

Minnesota. Massachusetts  has flat income tax, California has tons of rich people and the house that started Reagan career, and Maryland is close but I think Minnie wins.

@officepark, yes, Massachusetts is very left-wing but I think Vermont beats it in terms of left-wingens.

@Nichlemn, Minnesota is one of the most Democratic states in terms of presidential races. Last time it voted Republican was in 1972 and it was McGovern third best state. It also produced Democtratic heros such as Paul Wellstone, HHH, Walter Mondale, and Gene McCarthy.

In recent years, it has had a fairly modest Democratic lean.
