http://people-press.org/2011/07/28/obama-loses-ground-in-2012-reelection-bid/

Here's the nugget:

Independent voters           March 2011      May 2011      July 2011
Obama reelected                       40                  42                 31
Prefer Republican                      34                  35                 39
Other/DK (Vol.)                          26                  24                 30
                                                 100               100                100

                                              Obama +6    Obama +7    Republican +8

Wow.

Obama is currently heavily exposed in the debt ceiling debate, while the Republican candidates are quiet.

Once the Republican candidate opens the mouth and the media jumps in, the numbers will fall.

Not only that, it's just "prefer Republican".

Just like "Generic Republican" polls have zero bearing on anything, this tells us nothing either. It might as well say "prefer Morbo the News Monster".

The numbers themselves are irrelevant, but the movement is rather enlightening. This would suggest that voters are more likely to consider the Republicans as an alternative to Obama now. While the GOP still has to nominate someone electable, this bodes well for the prospects of someone like Romney, should he be nominated.
