IMO, it's going to be 6 Democrats and Republicans who will be redistricted/will not be running for re-election so hands will be clean.  No Teabaggers, either.

I'm not sure what that means for the House, but the Senators I think will be:

Democrats
Webb
Bingaman
Kohl

Republicans
Kyl
Hutchinson
Hatch or Lugar

You don't think Coburn will be on it?  Hutchinson is retiring. That seems a non starter in all events. Lugar? LOL. Hatch is possible, but he may have a tough primary, so I doubt he wants to get anywhere near that panel. So I guess I disagree with your entire Pubbie list.

And are not all the Dems quitting too?

I obviously don't know who will be appointed to the special committee.  But, how about this group?

Republicans:

Mike Crapo
Rob Portman
Tom Coburn
Paul Ryan
Spencer Bachus
Mike Simpson

Democrats:

Kent Conrad
Max Baucus
Richard Durbin
Chris van Hollen
Barney Frank
Marcy Kaptur

The GOP will nominate the most aggressive anti-tax, pro-military spending zealots they can find. The Dems will pick some moderate heroes and instruct them to compromise whenever possible. So predictable.

The lists I put together go largely along appropriate committee seniority lines, but select people who, for the most part (with the obvious exception of a few), won't draw un-passable lines in the sand, since the trigger threats serve as long-term binding incentives for people to make a deal.  Whatever the proposal, I'm sure it will get at least four and maybe five "no" votes, probably from Ryan, Bachus, Durbin and Frank.  Of course, I'm assuming that the process will have some kind of rational outcome, which obviously is a dumb assumption on my part.

I commend you for even making a list.  I think the bolded ones are spot on even though I'm not second guessing you on the rest.

It is going to be folks who are viewed as tough and effective negotiators. The caucus will accept nothing less. It is not going to be appropriator types like Rogers. The caucus would rebel. I am sure Ryan, Crapo and Portman will be on it. The caucus may demand that Cantor be on it, and I suspect he will, unless that stretches him too thin. Coburn said he will not be on it, and he voted against the bill. And I am not sure who they are (other than Ryan), but there will be a tax guru on the panel, since that will be a hot topic. Mitch may put himself on it, since I suspect he thinks nobody does it better than he, and he may be right. He has been the man behind the curtain so far really.

Anvi, who are Mike Durbin and Chris van Hallen? Evil twins of the gentlemen from Illinois and Maryland?

I do, for the most part, agree with your list, though. But I anticipate that the maniacs in the House will demand some creepazoid like Cantor be on it.

Smiley  Thanks for catching the bad names.  Fixed.  I don't know why I put "Mike" Durbin  There was a great professional bowler from some years ago named Mike Durbin, and maybe I had it in the back of my head somewhere that I liked him better than one of my Senators.

God, I hope they don't pick Cantor.  I detest that guy.

Republicans: one crazy to appease the Tea Partiers, four hard-line conservatives who aren't outwardly crazy, and one fauxderate to appear bipartisan.

Democrats: four moderates, one moderate liberal, and one progressive, so they can look like the adults in the room (it won't work).

Remember that you need just one defector from one party to the other to get something out of this super committee. McConnell strongly implied he is going to put folks on with creative minds tonight. The big issue is getting something out of the super committee that can pass both houses. It is a tricky business. Odds are it will be a failure and we will go the default option, unless the polls suggest that would be a bad idea.

Assuming the threat of barring "No" votes from the committee isn't true, Toomey would certainly be in the running as he should be.
