I couldn't begin to tell you who compromises Gringrich's base. I would like to believe that most of them will splinter as opposed to my fear that they will only strengthen Perry or Bachmann.

I don't think they have left the party in drove after their marvelously smart choice of John McCain by an overwhelming margin three years ago  (Not! ). With economic issues dominating over social issues, I think there might be a significant number of Vermont Republicans who aren't following Bachmann close enough to know how conservative she is socially. Many have probably only heard that she was against raising the debt ceiling, which might be playing well with Republicans there. I would say the most surprising result is how low Ron Paul is, considering he fits the Vermont GOP and electorate pretty well. Vermont Republicans are probably the most real conservatives out there if you consider that they have pretty much stuck to the original Republican party platform the closest since its first formation.

Seriously. After Romney, Gingrich is the most establishment candidate currently in the pack.
