They're going to have absolutely nothing to say in Charlotte 12 months from now other than "look at how stupid/crazy/hypocritical the Republicans are." Meanwhile, there's not a single segment of the population the Republicans can't appeal to if they do it right. If only US history had writers and we could pull a Matt Santos out of our ass Tongue

Republicans can't appeal to me, but that doesn't mean that I'll be voting Obama.

Please stop comparing Obama to Jimmy Carter, it's becoming tiresome.

When the parallels stop, I will.  It is ironic that you object to it on the day gold hits a record high.

A more accurate comparison is Richard Nixon.

The gold bubble still hasn't burst?

Do I really have to bother explaining why comparing Obama to Carter is ignorant?

What's the youth unemployment rate in the country right now, BRTD? 20%? What's it for minority (non-rich Asian) youth? 30%? Hell, something like 20% of 2009 college grads with math/computer science degrees are unemployed.  The Republicans obviously aren't going to win the youth vote or the minority vote, but the Democrats really have no case. So be happy that Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann are really stupid people.

Thing is the statement still isn't right as the Republicans can't appeal to those people with anyone capable of winning the nomination, just as they can't appeal to blacks with candidate no matter how high black unemployment is.

Yeah, this line of reasoning is amusing. I would feel bad for the people buying gold, except that they're totally asking for it by buying gold.

It didn't burst for Carter until 1980, and didn't start until 1979.  I think we're seeing the start of the bubble now.

Well, Maureen Dowd said the same thing less than two weeks ago.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/31/opinion/sunday/dowd-tempest-in-a-tea-party.html?ref=maureendowd  She's not exactly an arch-conservative.

I thought he was a war criminal financed by financial criminals years ago and I still do. Of course the same will be true doubtlessly of whoever replaces him.

I actually remember you being quite fond of him years ago.

Actually, Carter was in terrible shape until the embassy personnel in Tehran were seized.  He got a few months of 'rally round the President' during which he finished off Kennedy before the public returned to their recognition that he was a disaster.

It's an interesting bet. If the economy collapses into hyperinflation, the gold will retain its purchasing power, probably with a substantial premium. If the economy collapses into a deflationary depression, the investment will lose nominal value, but, retain its purchasing power. If we muddle through, gold will go down in real terms. It's really a bet on the political class. Would you bet for our political class?

As much as I don't want to feel any older than I already do 2009 was awhile ago.
