RIP.

Great man. One of the last Republicans I'd even consider voting for.

This country would be great if the majority of Republicans were like Hatfield rather than Mitch McConnell (still wouldn't vote for them though). Unfortunately liberal and moderate Republicans are dead since the Christian right and the no tax ever under any circumstances dogmatists took over the GOP in the 1980s.

Even the "moderate" Republicans of today like the Maine twins (and maybe Scott Brown) are much more right-wing than Hatfield.

Still I lost quite a bit of respect for him when he endorsed Bush in 2004.

Not as liberal as Jeffords (Republican record only) or Lincoln Chafee. But yeah, neither of those is a Republican any more, so you're kind of out of options.

One of a very few good men in the last century who was in the United States Senate.  And unlike a lot of so-called "moderate Republicans", he actually deserves a lot of the praise he gets.

RIP. It's only Monday and it has already been a bad week... first Governor Carey and now Senator Hatfield. Again, RIP.

RIP, Mark Hatfield. Though I'm not on board with the entire praise Hatfield craze that Liberals and Libertarians alike are on, he still was, at least as far as I know, a good man.

RIP. Was definitely a FF.

Didn't know much about his earlier life, so I looked it up, and his pre-Senate career is awesome in its own right:

  • In 1950 he was the youngest member of the Oregon Legislature. He lived with his parents, taught early morning classes at Williamette University, then after class crossed the street to the state capitol to do his work as a legislator.
  • He introduced and sponsored the bill that prohibited racial discrimination in public accommodations in Oregon, years before the Supreme Court did so Federally
  • He was at the time the youngest OR Secretary of State and Governor
  • He was the only governor in the nation that voted against a 1966 National Governor's Conference resolution supporting the Vietnam War

R.I.P to one of my favorite Republican. We need more of him in Washington. A admirable guy even if you disagree with his politics.

It's depressing when I head to Google news and I don't see his name anywhere. That shows you how screwed up America is.

Rest in peace Mark Hatfield. A good man, though as Cathcon says, I'm not on board with the left-wing nonsense about Hatfield being the "last good Republican" or anything.
