List of Presidents by home states
«
on:
December 15, 2004, 07:12:39 pm »
Can someone post one? By home state, I don't necessarily mean the state they were born in, probably the state they ran in.
I want to make a map of each state and its number of presidents.

This list has Richard Nixon's home state down as CA. But he ran from New York. Where is his library?

I'm not sure if he has one, but Google referenced Yorba Linda, California.

I'm surprised Pennsylvania and Illinois are so low, for states that are so large and have been for a while.
Looks like Florida is overdue...

That's inconsistent. Wilscon was not born in New Jersey. Eisenhower was not elected from Kansas.

It's not supposed to be consistent. By home state, I want what they considered their home state.
Eisenhower, for example, is buried in Kansas.

Richard Nixon ran from New York in 1968 and from California in 1972.
The Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace
is located in Yorba Linda, CA.

Wilson is from Virginia.
He was born in Virginia. He ran for President in New Jersey, and I believe his entire political career was in that State.

Which illustrates why it's not really easy to classify people as being from certain states.
Herbert Hoover may have been born in Iowa...but he lived his entire life in California.
Would you consider GHWB to be from Connecticut (as I'd say) or Texas (as that list did)?
Is Ike from PA or Kansas?
Is Coolidge from Vermont or Massachusetts?
And so on and so forth.

Hoover's library is in Iowa, so I figured that should be his home state.
Home is where the heart is, as they say. Though perhaps I should change Hoover...

Due to the reality that for many, legal residence changes from time to time, usually, Presidents are listed by their state of birth. That is one thing you can pin down with little uncertainty.
It is an entirely different matter to have the list reflect the state with which they were most associated, or the state where their political career blossomed, or what ever other criteria you might choose.

State of birth is pretty arbitrary. Reagan's home state is California, not Illinois. Bush's home state is Texas, not Connecticut.

Wilson is from Virginia.
Hey States, it has always puzzled me why you want Virginia to get the credit for Woodrow Wilson. Wilson signed the Espionage act which was one of the most trecherous assaults on the first amendment in a long time. Wilson also supported the League of Nations, which was the UN's forerunner. Given all of this, I would think you'd be more than willing to let Jersey take credit for him.

Correct. I have been trying for some time to pin down for certain the home states of Nixon and Eisenhower, but I can't say for sure for either one. (best I can figure out: Eisenhower NY '52, Eisenhower PA '56, Nixon NY '68, Nixon CA '72). Even birthplaces can be hard to pin down, just ask the Carolinas who both claim to be the birthplace of Andrew Jackson to this day.

Wilson is also responsible for the Federal Reserve.
I remember hearing some very bad things about him, but I don't remember what they were. lol. Can someone refresh my memory?
