It depends on the person and just how repulsive (or not) I find their beliefs. If my personal interactions betray some kind of answer, when I consider the friend of mine who fits each description best, my friend in the secular right wins in a landslide but it might just be that I respect him. Now if it's Ayn Rand or someone of the like, my answer changes. Then again, it also depends on the views of the religious left in question. I am generally accepting of economic leftists, but religious social leftists bother me.

As long as the Religious Left let's me continue to be secular, then I'd take that.

The religious left is good people.

Do you agree with my religious left position that this forum would be far better off it was moderated in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ as opposed to the arbitrary whims of the mods against people they dislike?

That would probably be a choice between neocons and/or scientific racists.. And tax and spend fundies or liberals trying to pretend their 2,000 year old book doesn't totally contradict their post-modern values. No thanks.

Yes, of course.

If the teaching's of Jesus Christ were to not moderate at all, I would agree.

As to the poll question, obviously religious left is - in a practical sense - better than irreligious right.

Depends entirely on the context. I would consider myself part of the 'secular right' in the UK.

Don't know, honestly. I guess it depends what you mean with both terms.

Secular Right : Might be super-neocons or anarcho-capitalists who are just as nutty as the religious right. Or decent, socially moderate and fiscally responsible conservatives.

Religious Left : Might be populist fundies, who are in fact reactionaries and not left-wing at all. Or decent people who think Christian values like tolerance and charity are better embodied by a left-wing platform.

This is a very rough and simplistic categorization, of course. You're certainly closer to #2 anyways.

I'm having a tough time thinking of any notable movements that fall into the first category. The closest thing would probably be the southern Blue Dogs who were devastated last election and were never truly left wing even on economics since so many were against universal health care and whatnot.

The religious left I'd say would be almost universally like these people: http://www.transmissioning.org

William Jennings Bryan ? True, he had a few left-wing ideas, but his positions on evolution makes him rather repulsive for any left-winger.

Well, historical context is everything, so that's a bit like expressing resentment for LBJ because he wasn't proactive enough in expanding equal rights for gays.  It is unfortunate that Bryan used his public profile to rail against evolution in his later years, but over some of the corporatist shills he opposed over the years he would have my vote despite his nonsensical views on science.  The real question is not a politician's specific views on any one subject but the general direction of their platform - and Bryan's was one of progress and a fairer distribution of resources.
