A question:
What did Eugene McCarthy, and George Romney stand for in the 1968 election? I mean in terms of policies and whatnot. A book I've been reading--well, more like skimming through--titled Nixonland seems to present McCarthy and Romney as the best candidates in terms of their character; Romney's honesty is mentioned, as is McCarthy's passion and fearlessness with regard to taking a stand. But what did they stand for politically? Where did they stand on domestic issues, on the Vietnam War? They seem to have been forgotten as presidential hopefuls and they stand out as being interesting.

Oh really? Actually, McCarthy is remembered as a presidential candidate, not Senator.

This.

If Eugene McCarthy never ran for President many people would ask "who the hell was Eugene McCarthy"?

You've never heard of famed anti-war candidate Eugene McCarthy?

Romney was antiwar, but otherwise he had the same political stances as his son did in 1994. Fiscal conservative, social centrist.

McCarthy: Liberal on everything domestically, existing foreign commitments should be honored but otherwise no foreign engagements.

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm praying for another black-yellow majority, and for the SPD to get shattered.  It's exactly what it deserves.
