Name the current First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland the the parties they represent.
Peter Robinson, DUP; Martin McGuinness, SF

Which party won every election to the old Parliament of Northern Ireland?
Ulster Unionist.

What was "The Troubles"?
The civil war.

Who was Bobby Sands?
A hunger striking imprisoned IRA militant with long hippie hair who was elected MP by the good people of Fermanagh and South Tyrone, but not of course allowed to serve. He died on hunger strike soon after.

MEDIUM

What was "Bloody Sunday" and when did it occur?
British soldiers killing harmless Catholic demonstrants early in the Troubles. In Derry IIRC.

What part of Gerry Adams was banned in the UK and Ireland for a number of years?
What part? As in body part? I don't get it.

Name three active Terrorist groups during The Troubles, with at least one being Republican and one Loyalist.
IRA, INLA, UVF, UDA, RUC, the British Army.

What city is sometimes called "Slash City" and why?
?

What is the method of Cabinet Selection in the Assembly?
Proportional (D'Hondt)

Name the parties currently in Cabinet in Northern Ireland
DUP, SF, UUP, SDLP, APNI. At least that was supposed to happen based on the last elections, didn't follow events to see if it was actually done (it was close), but I suppose Jas would have told me otherwise.

The shaking of hands of which two men brought in the current democratic period for Northern Ireland?
Ian Paisley and ...Martin McGuinness? (Or Gerry Adams? Or are you thinking of Good Friday rather than Slow Learners' Good Friday, as I am?)

HARD

"The Parades" are a controversial event in Northern Ireland. What event do the largest of these commemorate? Bonus points for naming the event that the Apprentice Boys commemorate.
17th century massacres of Protestants by Catholics.

Who is the official party leader for Sinn Fein in the Assembly (clue, it's not the dFM)
It isn't? Oh. Michelle Gildernew?

Who (which party leader) was literally dragged out of the legislature kicking and screaming in 1986
There wasn't a legislature of Northern Ireland in 1986. Ian Paisley was dragged out of the European Parliament somewhere around then, though, protesting against the Antichrist John Paul II.

What city is sometimes called "Slash City" and why?

Google the two phrases, and all the top results for "Stroke City" refer to Derry... none of those for "Slash City" do. And there's half as many of them overall.
Not that I'd heard that one either.

In Ireland, "Slash City" would probably be understood to refer to Limerick city (although the usual term there is "Stab City").

"Stroke City" was originally coined by a radio talkshow host called Gerry Anderson, and plays on the name of the English football club Stoke City.

Before I give Observers rather hard questions a whirl...

EASY

Name the current First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland the the parties they represent. Robinson DUP, McGuinness Sinn Fein

Which party won every election to the old Parliament of Northern Ireland?
Ulster Unionist
What was "The Troubles"?
Low intensity communal conflict over status of Norther Ireland lasting from around 1968/69-1998
Who was Bobby Sands?
IRA Volunteer who led the hunger strike of 1981. Had been imprisoned for weapons charges. Sought for five demands for prisoners rights from Thatcher govt. Was elected MP to FST before dying.

MEDIUM

What was "Bloody Sunday" and when did it occur?
Jan 30 1972, Derry.  British parachute regiment opened fire on unarmed demonstrators. (Some claim Mr McGuinness himself had been taking some potshots at British army) First tribunal to investigate was Widgery Tribunal- largely seen as a whitewash. Subsequent Bloody Sunday tribunal, after decades and a lot of money, found British army had lied and was largely at fault.

What part of Gerry Adams was banned in the UK and Ireland for a number of years?
voice, interestingly Stephen Rea and other actors were called in to voice Republican statements.

Name three active Terrorist groups during The Troubles, with at least one being Republican and one Loyalist.  hmm A NICE ALPHABET SOUP. PIRA, OIRA, CIRA, RIRA, INLA, UDA, UVF, UFF, LVF, Red Hand Commandoes, Orange Volunteers and several others. LOL @ Lewis answers.

What city is sometimes called "Slash City" and why?
Ive never heard this term.
What is the method of Cabinet Selection in the Assembly?
Can't remember the name- works on power sharing principle where parties share in the executive

Name the parties currently in Cabinet in Northern Ireland
DUP, UUP, SDLP, Sinn Fein and Alliance
The shaking of hands of which two men brought in the current democratic period for Northern Ireland?  Presumedly you mean Paisley and Adams, obviously it took a lot more work than the handshake...

HARD

"The Parades" are a controversial event in Northern Ireland. What event do the largest of these commemorate? Bonus points for naming the event that the Apprentice Boys commemorate.
The largest parades commemorate King Billy's defeat of King James II at the Battle of the Boyne on July 12, 1690 (July 1 old calendar).  The apprentice Boys have a couple of different parades/ceremonies.  One is the closing of the gates- when the apprentice boys defied Lundy's order to surrender and closed the gates to start the siege. The one in August commemorates the lifting of the siege. The Royal Black Institution also has a large parade on July 13th, The Sham fight and ones throughout NI in August.  I somehow managed to not get bottled at one in Ballymena Smiley

Who is the official party leader for Sinn Fein in the Assembly (clue, it's not the dFM)
Well, Adams is still the President of Sinn Fein, but Ray McCartney also has a leadership title within the Assembly.
Who (which party leader) was literally dragged out of the legislature kicking and screaming in 1986  Well Big Ian has been dragged out of many venues in his time.  I assume you mean this

EASY
Name the current First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland the the parties they represent.
FM: Peter Robinson, DUP.
dFM: Martin McGuiness, SF.

Which party won every election to the old Parliament of Northern Ireland?
Ulster Unionists, i.e. UUP

What was "The Troubles"?
A time of violent tensions in Northern Ireland, where religious troubles were very problematic. IRA and republican groups were killing Protestants and UVF and other loyalist groups were killing Catholics. It was a sort-of civil war and could have degenerated in a ethnic war, if UK and Ireland weren't modern states of law.

Who was Bobby Sands?
Some really young guy who died in jail of hunger strike and which was elected MP while being in jail. Very Republican.

MEDIUM
What was "Bloody Sunday" and when did it occur?
A parachute regiment of the Army shot on peaceful protestors asking for equality between Catholics and Protestants. I'll try 1982.

What part of Gerry Adams was banned in the UK and Ireland for a number of years?
A part? I'll say his voice, as it was the only part of him that was dangerous, even if I doubt than Ireland would depreve someone from his freedom to speech.

Name three active Terrorist groups during The Troubles, with at least one being Republican and one Loyalist.
IRA (Irish Republican Army), Republican. UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force), Loyalist. Real IRA, Republican.

What city is sometimes called "Slash City" and why?
Londonderry/Derry? Because neutrality forces the use of the two names and signs have the slash (/) on them?

What is the method of Cabinet Selection in the Assembly?
Seats are given on a proportionnal way. Each time a party is awarded a Cabinet seat, it chooses a cabinet office until all offices are taken. The Justice minister is an exception, since it is elected by a cross-community vote by the Assembly (which guarentees the seat to the Alliance, in fact)

Name the parties currently in Cabinet in Northern Ireland
DUP, UUP, SDLP, SF and Alliance (APNI)

The shaking of hands of which two men brought in the current democratic period for Northern Ireland?
Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley?

HARD

"The Parades" are a controversial event in Northern Ireland. What event do the largest of these commemorate? Bonus points for naming the event that the Apprentice Boys commemorate.
The victory of the ultra-protestant Orange prince over the Irish Catholics. The Apprentice Boys are based in Derry and commemorate some siege, I think.

Who is the official party leader for Sinn Fein in the Assembly (clue, it's not the dFM)
Michelle Gildernew?

Who (which party leader) was literally dragged out of the legislature kicking and screaming in 1986
Gerry Adams?

EASY

Name the current First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland the the parties they represent.
--- Sinn Fein and the DUP. Martin McGuiness is the deputy I think, I don't know who the Unionist one is.

Which party won every election to the old Parliament of Northern Ireland?
--- Ulster Unionist Party.

What was "The Troubles"?
--- The almost-civil war that involved the IRA, the British army, Northern Ireland police and paramilitary, diverse loyalist militia and diverse IRA splinters, and that last from 1969 to the 1990s.

Who was Bobby Sands?
--- An Irish Republican martyr, who died after a hunger strike in the H-blocks.

MEDIUM

What was "Bloody Sunday" and when did it occur?
--- 1972, forgot about the date. British paratroopers shot dead 13 men in Derry, who took part in a demonstration for civil rights. All of them unarmed, many 17-year-olds and some priests among them.

What part of Gerry Adams was banned in the UK and Ireland for a number of years?
--- What?

Name three active Terrorist groups during The Troubles, with at least one being Republican and one Loyalist.
--- (Provisional) Irish Republican Army (IRA / Provos), Ulster Defensive Army (UDA), Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF)

What city is sometimes called "Slash City" and why?
--- No idea. Derry?

What is the method of Cabinet Selection in the Assembly?
--- I don't know about the details, but the biggest Unionist party and the biggest Nationalist party have to form a mandatory coalition.

Name the parties currently in Cabinet in Northern Ireland
--- Sinn Fein and the DUP.

The shaking of hands of which two men brought in the current democratic period for Northern Ireland?
--- David Trimble, John Hume

HARD

"The Parades" are a controversial event in Northern Ireland. What event do the largest of these commemorate? Bonus points for naming the event that the Apprentice Boys commemorate.
--- Ah, its about that battle in the late 17th century (1692? Not sure...) where a protestant army defeated catholic King James (?). Don't know the date.

Who is the official party leader for Sinn Fein in the Assembly (clue, it's not the dFM)
--- Since Gerry Adams and Martin McGuiness are the only Shinners I know by name: Pass.

Who (which party leader) was literally dragged out of the legislature kicking and screaming in 1986
--- Ian Paisley?

a) For what constituency was Ian Paisley (Sr.) first elected to Stormont (the Northern Ireland Parliament)?

--- Ulster Unionist, I think. Before he formed the DUP.

--- Huh

f) What "first" did Gerard Benedict Newe achieve in 1971?

--- Huh

i) Which five Sinn Féin candidates were elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1982?
--- I bet McGuiness and Adams were among them. No idea who else.

j) Which seat did the Unionist parties lose in the bye-elections after the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1986 and to whom did they lose?
--- Possibly they lost it to the DUP. No idea which constituency.

k) Name the ten parties who took seats in elections to the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996.
--- Sinn Fein, SDLP, Alliance Party, UUP... wait, there were ten parties? The DUP did abstain iirc. Perhaps the Greens too. No idea who else.

l) Name the party which took six seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly elections in 1998, only to see all of its MLAs, apart from the party leader, leave the party. What, if any, connection did a cream bun have to this story?

a) North Antrim?

b) Vanguard?

c) Vanguard, again?

d) McCartney? Who renamed the party in UKUP? (I'm probaby saying nonsence, putting together names, parties and patchy memory.)

e) It was the only bill which passed with unanimity?

Not quite.

Yes. Ironically named by a journalist called Jim McDowell in reference to the continual verbal brawling and disruption employed by the Unionist majority, particularly against Sinn Féin councillors, in the aftermath of the Anglo-Irish Agreement.

m) Prior to the Dáil and Northern Ireland Assembly elections in 2011, three political parties had members in both legislative bodies. Name them.
--- Sinn Fein of course. And since you said prior to the Dail elections, and only one party lost all its seats in the Dail: The Greens? And "People Before Profit" maybe too.

McHugh might have been in FF but he remained Independent in the Assembly.

Without reading other answers...

a) For what constituency was Ian Paisley (Sr.) first elected to Stormont (the Northern Ireland Parliament)? North Antrim

b) Under what label was he first elected? Some shortlived party that basically became the DUP soon after.

c) What was the name of the party founded by Brian Faulkner in 1974?
Northern Ireland Unionist Party. It bombed.

d) Who succeeded Faulkner as leader of the party and what "first" did the new leader represent?
Forget his name; opposition to Sunningdale (and by extension, to any kind of dialogue with taigs)

e) What was the significance of the Wild Birds Act under the Stormont Parliament?
?

f) What "first" did Gerard Benedict Newe achieve in 1971?
?

g) Who was the Alliance Party's first Westminster MP?
The second was Naomi Long...

h) In the 1982 Assembly elections, the United Ulster Unionist Party failed to win a seat with only 1.8% of the vote. However, two of its candidates in that election were to serve in the Northern Ireland Executive between 2007 and 2011. Name them.
I needed the reminder of the first set of questions to recall that that election ever happened, now you expect me to know stuff about the unionist splinter parties of the time?

i) Which five Sinn Féin candidates were elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1982?
?

j) Which seat did the Unionist parties lose in the bye-elections after the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1986 and to whom did they lose?
Prolly the DUP.

k) Name the ten parties who took seats in elections to the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996.
UUP, DUP, PUP, APNI, SDLP, SF, Northern Ireland Womens' Coalition, Rob McCartney's outfit, uh... WP?

l) Name the party which took six seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly elections in 1998, only to see all of its MLAs, apart from the party leader, leave the party. What, if any, connection did a cream bun have to this story?
Yeah, as I said, Rob McCartney's outfit (wait, is that his name? MP for North Down). United Kingdom Unionist Party, I think the name was. No idea about the cream bun.

m) Prior to the Dáil and Northern Ireland Assembly elections in 2011, three political parties had members in both legislative bodies. Name them.
Uh, what? There were Greens in both bodies but it's not the same party, is it? SF obviously, and unless you're counting SDLP as "a Labour Party", I haven't a clue what you might be referring to.

n) Five urban areas in Northern Ireland have the title "city". Name them.
Derry, Belfast, Lisburn, uh... Armagh? What with the Cathedral and stuff? And... Bangor maybe?

o) Who has announced his intention to contest the leadership of the SDLP?
?

p) Which building acquired the nickname "Dome of Delights" during the 1980s?
?

q) What did the banner across its front declare until the courts ordered it to be taken down?
?

r) Two Paisleys were elected to Westminster from Northern Ireland seats in 2010. Name them.
I don't believe you. Ian Paisley the Father stood down and Ian Paisley the Son inherited the seat.

s) What catchy acronym was used by the electoral pact between the Ulster Unionists and Conservatives in the 2010 election?
UCUNF

t) Who stood as the Alliance Party candidate in the 2009 European elections?
?

u) For what party and in what constituency did he stand in the 2010 Westminster elections?
?

v) For what party and in what constituency did his girlfriend/partner stand in the 2010 Westminster elections?
?

w) Of what party is the girlfriend/partner now a member, having defected in November 2010?
I demand an end to the building questions already.

x) In which constituency did the SDLP ill-advisedly but accurately compare its 2001 Westminster election campaign to Stalingrad?
Belfast West? Seeing as they won it as late as 92 and now got totally clobbered?

McHugh might have been in FF but he remained Independent in the Assembly.

He was still publicly a member of the party though.

Northern Ireland Unionist Party. It bombed.

The NIUP was the party formed by the disaffected followers of the Cream Bun (see question l)). However, it bombed even more spectacularly than UPNI. (You could probably randomly generate a series of four letter acronyms containing UP and find that every one was a real Unionist splinter group).

Newry is the fifth. When a Prod market town (Lisburn) got upgraded it was considered balanced to give a Taig market town the leg-up at the same time.

c) What was the name of the party founded by Brian Faulkner in 1974? Unionist Party of Northern Ireland
d) Who succeeded Faulkner as leader of the party and what "first" did the new leader represent? Anne Dickson - first woman leader of a major party in Northern Ireland
e) What was the significance of the Wild Birds Act under the Stormont Parliament? Had symbolic significance as the only piece of legislation sponsored by a Nationalist MP to become law in the period between 1921 and 1972
f) What "first" did Gerard Benedict Newe achieve in 1971? First Catholic to become a cabinet minister (Minister for Community Relations)
g) Who was the Alliance Party's first Westminster MP? Stratton Mills (Belfast North) elected as Ulster Unionist; defected to Alliance in 1973 but didn't stand at the 1974 Westminster elections
h) In the 1982 Assembly elections, the United Ulster Unionist Party failed to win a seat with only 1.8% of the vote. However, two of its candidates in that election were to serve in the Northern Ireland Executive between 2007 and 2011. Name them. Reg Empey (Belfast East, now UUP) and Nelson McCausland (Belfast North, now DUP)
i) Which five Sinn Féin candidates were elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1982? Gerry Adams (Belfast West), Martin McGuinness (L'Derry), Owen Carron (Fermanagh-South Tyrone), Danny Morrison (Mid Ulster), Jim McAllister (Armagh)
j) Which seat did the Unionist parties lose in the bye-elections after the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1986 and to whom did they lose? Newry and Armagh - Jim Nicholson (UUP) lost to Séamus Mallon (SDLP)

What, if any, connection did a cream bun have to this story? UK Unionist Party. Its leader, Bob McCartney, had previously successfully sued a Belfast newspaper that had claimed that he'd been involved in an argument with another barrister over the last cream bun in a bakery
m) Prior to the Dáil and Northern Ireland Assembly elections in 2011, three political parties had members in both legislative bodies. Name them. Sinn Féin, Green Party, Fianna Fáil (Gerry McHugh, elected as a Sinn Féin MLA for Fermanagh-South Tyrone, defected to Fianna Fáil but didn't defend his seat in the 2011 elections)
n) Five urban areas in Northern Ireland have the title "city". Name them. Belfast, L'Derry, Armagh, Lisburn, Newry

p) Which building acquired the nickname "Dome of Delights" during the 1980s? Belfast City Hall
q) What did the banner across its front declare until the courts ordered it to be taken down? "Belfast Says No" - erected in opposition to the 1985 Anglo-Irish Agreement
r) Two Paisleys were elected to Westminster from Northern Ireland seats in 2010. Name them. Ian Paisley Jr (North Antrim) and Sylvia Hermon née Paisley (North Down) who was the UUP's only Westminster MP until they drove her out of the party because of her opposition to the pact with the Conservative Party
s) What catchy acronym was used by the electoral pact between the Ulster Unionists and Conservatives in the 2010 election? UCUNF (Ulster Conservatives and Unionists - New Force)
t) Who stood as the Alliance Party candidate in the 2009 European elections? Ian Parsley, an Alliance councillor in North Down; the similarity of his name to that of a well-known politician and former MEP may have boosted his vote
u) For what party and in what constituency did he stand in the 2010 Westminster elections? Parsley defected to the Conservatives later in the year and was given the nomination for North Down - resulting in the ousting of Hermon, the UUP's only MP
v) For what party and in what constituency did his girlfriend/partner stand in the 2010 Westminster elections? Parsley's partner is Paula Bradshaw, who symbolically for the pact, was installed as the UUP's candidate in Belfast South
w) Of what party is the girlfriend/partner now a member, having defected in November 2010? Bradshaw has now defected to the Alliance Party (and Parsley, having been shellacked by Hermon in the election, is no longer a Conservative and didn't defend his council seat in 2011)
x) In which constituency did the SDLP ill-advisedly but accurately compare its 2001 Westminster election campaign to Stalingrad? West Tyrone, where it had narrowly come second in 1997 to a Ulster Unionist elected on a split nationalist vote; it ended up falling to third place, while Sinn Féin's Pat Doherty took the seat
