do you think Johnson ever thought about dropping an atomic bomb on Hanoi or some enemy city in Vietnam to try to end in the war?

I have no idea about Lyndon, but I know that Nixon actually recommended dropping a few hydrogen bombs on Vietnam during the fifties in order to get rid of any sort of emerging problem.

If I had been President then I might have dropped it...maybe even during the height of the war.

No, he was deathly afraid of direct Soviet or Chinese interference.

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm praying for another black-yellow majority, and for the SPD to get shattered.  It's exactly what it deserves.

Yeah come to think of it, Johnson was really afraid of that. But, then you have to wonder, what is the difference between Johnson and Truman on the issue of an atomic bomb?

LBJ once told one of his daughters that their father may go down in history as the man who started World War III, which to me means that he probably considered dropping the big one at some point. As someone mentioned previously, Nixon did recommend dropping a few H-bombs on Vietnam in the 1950s to correct the problem, which was then just emerging, and reportedly considered dropping the A-bomb after he took control of the war as commander in chief.

In 1945, there wasn't an atomic arms race. I don't think Truman would have been willing to drop another A-Bomb, unless there was some consideration of this for Korea I don't know about.  By the 1960s, after Eisenhower set the tone about the threat of nuclear war, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, dropping an a-bomb just wasn't as much of an option in the mind of the public.

Use of the A-Bomb in Korea was definitely under consideration.  MacArthur being unwilling to leave statements concerning their possible use to the Administration was one factor in his being sacked.
