Who is your favorite Democratic Presidential nominee between 1896 and 1932? These were critical and transformative years for the Democratic Party, between the alliance with the Populists and the New Deal coalition.

Roosevelt first, Bryan second, Smith third.

Don't like and wouldn't have voted for the others.

Alfred Smith, hands down.

Honorable Mentions:

Alton B. Parker, 1904
William J. Bryan, 1900 (NOT 1896 or 1908)

Parker, Smith second (but loses out due to his inferior foreign policy views).

William J. Bryan, 1900 (NOT 1896 or 1908)

What makes the Bryan of 1900 so different from the Bryan of 1896, or 1908?

William J. Bryan, 1900 (NOT 1896 or 1908)

What makes the Bryan of 1900 so different from the Bryan of 1896, or 1908?

I was thinking that the 1900 Election seemed to put more emphasis on the anti-imperialist mantra of his campaign while the 1896 was about "free silver" and 1908 was about how TR wasn't "progressive" enough.
In other words, in 1900 he (being the non-protectionist non-imperialist) was the lesser evil than his Republican opponent (who was a fan of heavy tariffs while invading browns).

Allton  B. Parker, with Al Smith being a close second. Truly a forgotten man, but he would have made an excellent president. The last hurrah for the Gold Democrats and anti-imperialists (or at least, the combination of the two). Sad

Roosevelt, Wilson, WJB.

Why? I agree with the other two, but Wilson was pretty much an HP (and no, not because of the income tax or the Fed).

That's a bit harsh.  Other than FDR and WJB, Wilson was far superior to everyone else.  For someone like Garrison, Wilson definitely is the best one.

I always liked James Cox for some reason, he just seems like he could have been a half decent president.

I have a question for all of you though: What made Alton Parker so special? He just seems bland and unforgettable to me

He wad pretty much the last Bourbon (Conservative) Democrat nominated. Davis was more of a Southern Conservative & Smith only moved to the Right after 1928.

In what way?

There was quite a bit of progressive legislation in his first term, but iirc much of the pressure for it came from Congress, and most if not all would have been enacted under Bryan or Champ Clark.

For his second term, unless one views involvement in WW1, Prohibition or the Red Hunt as positive achievements <g> the only "plus" I can see is the Nineteenth (Women's Suffrage) Amendment, which again both Clark and Bryan supported. Bryan, indeed, had been an advocate long before Wilson showed the slightest interest in the matter.

On the downside, Wilson threw civil liberties to the winds, tolerating the brutal persecution of pacifists and other critics  of his policies. By November 1920, his party was a basket case, cast into a wilderness from which it took the Great Depression to rescue it. Better by far (even for Democrats) had Hughes been elected in 1916 and then probably Cox in 1920.
