Certainly not. Just as no one would say that disliking all conservatives or liberals, would be bigoted. Though I certainly do NOT dislike all conservatives. Disliking someone because of their Catholic heritage, would be though.

Yes, unless they're in a cult.

I'll agree with this, also I have no problems with people of faith... but if that faith turns them into an arse... then I will feel completely free to dislike them Smiley

If it's not then I would hope that standard would be applied equally to all (ie it's as acceptable for an evangelical to dislike Muslims as it is for atheists to dislike evangelicals, etc etc)

Yes, so long as these beliefs do not impact you in a negative way.

^^^^

This is why I don't like those who complain about "bigotry" or "intolerance"; not only do they make exceptions for religion, they make exceptions for individual religions (i.e., it's "bigoted" if an evangelical Christian disapproves of a Muslim, but not if a Catholic is hated by anyone else)

Uummm... Yeah, dude.  If someone doesn't like someone purely because of their religion (assuming its not demonic devil worship) then they are a bigot.

Here, by the way, is a definition of the word 'bigot' from a 1982 dictionary:

"A person who is rigidly devoted to his own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ."

So those who hate others based on religion do qualify as bigots.

If you dislike someone just because of their religion is it bigoted?  Of course it's bigoted.

You wouldn't necessarily be wrong either.  If you've met 10 followers of Og and all of them were asshats, there is a really good chance the 11th will be an ass too, but you should still probably give  him/her the benefit of doubt.

Yep, this.

It's OK to dislike a group based on religious beliefs but not every individual within that group.

I'm an atheist and one of my closest friends is a tithe-giving fundamentalist Christian.  We just talk about other sh** most of the time and agree to disagree when religious matters arise.

Note how I said "religious beliefs" rather than religion.

I would agree, but would not go as far as to call it "bigoted".

It depends on the nature of those religious beliefs. Suppose someone had a religious belief that you deserve to be tormented forever - I don't think I'd feel like copying up to a person. Might not be a reason to outright hate the person, but merely disliking isn't out of the question.

If it is part of someones religious belief (according to them) to suggest that there is something wrong with me, that I am 'evil' or 'perverted' on account of my sexual orientation then yes, I think I do have the right to dislike them.

It isn't as though there's an objective definition of bigotry. So the answer is 'usually'.

No.

However I do dislike people that attempt to impose their views on me, weather it's about Jesus and Mohammed, or Butter and Margarine. The problem, of course, is the former is far more common.

If you are prejudging someone based on their religious beliefs and are not willing to consider them apart from this, then yes. For example just because a person has a belief I find offensive and closed-minded, doesn't mean they are closed-minded about everything or are uncaring.  It's hard not to make those judgements though -it's perfectly understandable, but hopefully you can move beyond them.

That sorta reminds me of this super religious family they had on some dateline broadcast because they had 20 kids or some damn thing. At first I thought they were kinda amusing. Backwards countrified folks... Then they went on and prayed at every moment and got particularly annoying about going into pools fully clothed... I'm an eyesore and even I wouldn't go in a pool fully clothed!

Then they just really began pissing me off... Being anti-government southerners, the father did say he enjoyed getting those tax credits for every one of those goddamned kids he had. Uncle Sam is horrible until he gives you that check, right?!

I literally began wishing death upon these people as the show went on... Why didn't I turn the channel, you ask?... I'm also a masochist.

You'll have those rare people like that who go out of their way to be agitating, but other than that, I don't tend to hate people based on their religion. I just hate them when they're asinine.

It all depends on those beliefs. If you dislike someone because, say, they believe that Jesus of Nazareth was the Son of God, then yes, it probably is bigoted. That's not an extreme or hateful doctrine. On the other hand, disliking someone because they want to kill "infidels" is probably not bigoted. That's an extreme doctrine that brings damage to people's lives.
