I hate to be a dick here but why is this a bad thing?

Her plans and/or ability to serve are unclear and the people in her District deserve full-time representation........

No one is saying she should resign, but what's the big whup about running against her in 2012?

There hasn't historically been any 'big whup' over running against politicians who have been shot or shot at.

The basic presumption ought to be that the Republicans and Democrats field candidates in all 435 seats.

The Congresswoman was shot during the performance of her duties.  I'm not saying she shouldn't have an opponent like anyone else, but I'm not going to fret if the GOP doesn't have a strong candidate here.

The basic presumption ought to be that the Republicans and Democrats field candidates in all 435 seats.

That's a nice thought that we can accomplish right after we stop gerrymandering 85% of the seats for a pre-determined partisan outcome.

BTW, it isn't "Gifford's Seat." The seat belongs to the people of Arizona. The Constitution states any citizen in Arizona 25, or older, may stand for that office. If Giffords wishes to sit in that seat in the next Congress then she must run and win, the same as any other eligible candidate in Arizona.

Thats the stuff they tried to say about the Kennedy seat. Yes; the seat that Scott Brown holds is the "Kennedy Seat." Manchin has the "Byrd Seat." Landrieu has the "Kingfish Seat." And so on.

The stuff they tried to say, eh? Scott Brown's strongest line of the campaign was about it being "the peoples' seat."

Anyone who wants to run can run, but I think both parties want to see what she's going to do and of the course, the Democrats are going to give her first choice. Let her recover and be given the chance to decide, she deserves that over partisan need for another seat.

The People's Seat (sounds rather Chinese) argument was used, but then Republican flipped right around once they won it screeching that they won Kennedy's seat.

That's the difference between mainstreet and the beltway. When Brown noted that it was the people's seat he won the debate point, and gained momentum going into the election. You would think upon reflecting on that outcome the political class would try to be more circumspect.

Giffords cannot perform her duties in any way, shape or form, and won't be able to in the near future. She should not run again. Let's get real. Her seat more likely than not will get more GOP anyway, so she will have a tough slog.

First, its NOT "Gifford's seat"!  Its an elective position where in the last election Giffords 'won' with less than a majority of the vote.

Second, probably redistricting is likely to make it a more Republican oriented district.

Third, its looking more and more like Giffords will not be able to resume her duties, and may not even seek to be elected in 2012.

Giffords appeared on the House floor, inserted her voting card into the appropriate slot, and pushed the "yea" button she intended to push. Apparently, she is able to perform her duty. Perhaps, in the near future she will resume voting on regular basis, at least on bills of importance.

What she can't do is walk across the street to a special room provided by the parties to dial for dollars effectively.

Yes, she does have brain damage. Then again, there are older members whom are really losing it. I think it is up to the voters to sort this stuff out.

I'm sure the Republicans only care about the interests of their constituents and they don't mean any disrespect for Giffords.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alex-brantzawadzki/az-republicans-celebrate-_b_943014.html

An Arizona Republican fundraiser is offering as a prize the same type of gun used in the attempted assassination of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

On August 26 the Pima County Republican Party sent out its regular online newsletter, e-Tracks [PDF]. It contained your standard newsletterisms - an intro from the chairman, a description of local candidates, a calendar of upcoming events, and so on. But this particular issue also featured an eye-catching giveaway to raise money for GOTV (Get Out the Vote) efforts. For just $10, readers can purchase a raffle ticket (out of 125 offered) for a chance to win a brand new handgun. Not just any handgun, but a Glock 23

Arizona Republicans surely know just how effective this particular brand of gun can be. After all, it was only eight months ago that Jared Lee Loughner used a Glock 19 in Tucson - the seat of Pima County - to shoot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the head. Giffords survived, but six other people, including a nine year old girl and a federal judge, were killed in the same shooting.

The raffle gun comes preloaded with adjustable grips, a case, and three 12-round magazines. Glock USA describes the model as "a slightly reduced size of a full-size handgun for easier concealment but still retains the performance on the level of a serious big bore."
