Reagan because of the Foreign Policy victories, but he left a large mess for Clinton to clean up. Both were great, Reagan was better by a hair.

I'm not sure either is the greatest, but between the two, Reagan.

The question atop the poll asks who was the greatest of the 20th century, and the question you pose in the first post is which one was greater.

If it's the first question, I'd say neither, not by a long shot.  I think TR and FDR enjoy these honors.

If it's the second question, to be honest, I'd have to think about it; it's a close call.  I'd probably say Reagan in the end, less because I agreed with his decisions more often (which I didn't) than because the historical impact and consequence of his presidency were in the long run greater than Clinton's.

I meant to add others but there was a malfunction and this incomplete poll was created. I orignally intended Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt to be a part of this poll.

Neither by a long shot. FDR was the greatest.

None of the above

If I had to pick a "Greatest of the 20th" I go with FDR.

  • More Inspiring than Reagan
  • Overcame greater economic challenges than Clinton
  • Overcame greater foreign policy challenges than Reagan
  • Never had a Iran-Contra or Lewinsky type scandal

Which was wrong, but at the time was almost universally supported. Remember that this was the heat of war.

But we're looking at it through the perspective of history so it doesn't really apply. Slavery and abuse of the Native Americans was also universally supported throughout history yet that doesn't change how we look at those terrible acts.

I believe FDR is one of the greatest leaders this nation has had but to ignore such a black mark on his record of human rights is inexcusable.

Clinton was an excellent president, at least post 1994..

Reagan gets the nod by a bit however.

How many democratic nations were there in 1980...

How many are there today?

Nuff said.

Did Reagan do it all.. of course not.  Maggie Thatcher, Pope John Paul 2, The Solidarity Movement in Poland, Gorbachev, ...  Lots of people get a well deserved bunch of praise, but Reagan gets his due...

Reagan also DOUBLED the amount of revenue collected annually by the Federal Government, which naturally was useful in reducing the deficits along with this policies of controlling spending...

That's your criteria of whether someone is a good president?  Why should anyone, much less an american voter, care about whether their are 'democracies'?

I for one dislike them.

But it is really hilarious to call either Reagan or Clinton 'the greatest' at anything.  Maybe Reagan could be fairly termed 'the greatest at destroying America'.

Of course FDR and LBJ were the greatest presidents of all time (none before the 20th century were any good).  But out of context they were still horrible.
