How many people even know right now that he voted for a multi-billion dollar tax hike on Texas back in 1987?

Do you people even know any average Joe voters or do you hang out only with political junkies? Stuff like that just doesn't interest 90% of voters

more importantly, he'll be judged on his mistakes over the last 12 years as Governor of Texas...and he has made very few mistakes over those last 12 years (mainly because he's done next to nothing as Governor)

there is no way the jmfcst's of the gop are going to vote for romney

Just like how they wouldn't vote for McCain?

yo, I supported McCain for the nomination in 2008...in fact, I was about 2 months ahead of the GOP polls (initially backing McCain, then trying on other suits, ended up going back to McCain)

...in fact, I have been a bellwether for the GOP nomination all the way back to 1980 (I was only 9 in 1976, so I really didnt have an opinion)

and right now the GOP base is exhausted in its fruitless search for the right candidate, so the weary have cut bait and are backing Perry by default.  Romney NEVER had a chance at the GOP nomination, for he has no core following in the GOP primaries.

Yes.  The word about "corporations are people" really needs to get out.

"yes, I left the dem party, just like reagan did..."

perry could turn this into a plus

How is that going to work if people can say that Perry supported Walter Mondale and Jimmy Carter instead of Ronald Reagan? And how is he going to defend his multi-billion dollar tax hike in 1987, right at the tail-end of the Reagan Revolution? And his desire to see Al Gore succeed Ronald Reagan in 1988?

Richard Shelby jump the GOP ship even later in 1994. Does anyone question his loyalty to the party?

OK, not a presidential level, but still. There are plenty former Democrats in South who joined GOP even after Perry.

Perry can win the general. Romney would. Perry could.

All he has to do is revert it back to Bush-Kerry and maybe put Martinez on the ticket as a cushion for New Hampshire. But Perry could definitely win, and I'm not so sure I'd put PA in Obama's column yet, but that could be guided more by anti-Perry sentiment.

The "career politician" line of attack is weak for Romney against Perry, as I can already think of a couple of retorts that would work well with the GOP base.

They should switch to something else (because other lines of attack do exist that will work).

You have to love people that use the career politician line on others when they themselves spent so long trying but failing to be a career politician. See: Mitt Romney 1994 and Mitt Romney 2008. Santorum recently pointed that out about Mitt. Then there is his successful bid for office in 2002 that would have to count towards being a politician.

As Sam said, this certainly isn't a winning argument for Romney.

Romney was almost 50 when he first ran for Senate in 1994, and was a self-made millionaire at that point, so how does that equate to attempting to be a career politician?

By the way, why is Santorum still in denial about what happened in 2006? He is the master of self-deception. Say what we will about Pawlenty, but at least he knows when to get out.

Maybe not for most of his lifetime but he was certainly attempting to be a politician for quite some time during his life.

Yawn. The act has just become so incredibly predictable at this point.

...  gaffe-prone (did you hear his comments about Bernanke?) ...

The fact that you think his comment about Bernanke was a gaffe shows you are not perceptive about what is going on the Republican party.
