I don't know how I feel about this.  Obviously it would be great to see a job plan next to the old conservative style of cutting taxes and pretending that some how makes more jobs, and seeing both on the same night would be great while all Americans are tuned in.  It is clearly a political move.

Wednesday is congress's first day back in session after recess.  Thursday night is NFL kickoff.  Besides the appearance of bravado, and Rush Limbaugh baiting the GO Pinto a pissing contest... how exactly does this speech timing hurt the GOP anyway?

remind me again:  where did the idea arise that Obama was smart?

Oh Obama!
You told Boehner
to make room on his calendar
for your speech full of *hit.
Now he tells you
to eat your *hit
on your own calendar.
Who is the Speaker,
and who is the POTUS?

Do you hear
laughter, Obama?
Yes.
The laughter of Americans.
In Florida,
in Ohio,
in Pittsburgh PA...
...as the POTUS surrenders
to the Speaker,
once again!

I know... let's make it a double-header! Obama can give his speech at 8pm and the debate can start at 9pm (or how ever much later the speech is expected to run). That way we can hear each candidate's answer to Obama.

Well, you have to admit, this is a "change."  Smiley

Apparently Obama's self invitation was either unusual or even unprecedented.  http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/08/31/2384487/obama-boehner-spar-over-timing.html

Thanks for the link. Huffingtonpost's interesting butchering of the english dictionary is rather amusing to read.

The GOP wants the timeslot focused on its candidates. Such is to be expected.

And Romney scheduling his jobs plan to jump ahead of Obama's.  That's baseball.

Seems obvious to me the Obama speech happening the same night is better for the GOP.  They just can't say yes.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the Congress, because you're not invited?

Good one!

Congress is just getting back. So if there wasn't a GOP debate it would be the time to pull out this plan. But there's this debate and so now there's questioning of the timing. Maybe congress should be coming back into session earlier then? Or maybe later? Because oh woe to the candidates for having to have their debate after the president gives a speech that they can try to rip apart as they wish to a national audience. Those poor poor candidates.

The President was hoping that the congress critters would learn a thing or two from their constituents during the recess and thus be in the mood to do something on jobs when they got back. Getting them on just that asap is a good idea. The drama about the timing and the debate is a stupid side show for the most part and can easily be pointed to as a demonstration that the Republicans are more interested in silly political games as opposed to solving real problems.

or maybe the POTUS shouldn't have waited 32 months into his term before focusing on jobs

Seriously who is actually going to stay at home and watch one of Obama's dull and depressing speeches about jobs? The GOP debate will be entertaining, mind-blowing, and exciting. Especially with the newbie Rick Perry in.

I wouldn't be surprised if NBC doesn't air the speech actually. So much marketing and ad money goes into the first game of the year.

Dumb idea.

Another surrender by Obama. Sure, this is trivial crap that by Friday no one will care about or remember but it's such a troubling pattern and leads me to believe his team is genuinely clueless.

Mind-numbing political ineptness.  But then again, that's been the Obama administration story for quite a while now.
