Alabama voters are unhappy with President Barack Obama, undecided about the Republican presidential field and pessimistic about the national economy, according to a new survey.

The poll, conducted by Capital Survey Research Center, the polling arm of the Alabama Education Association, found Texas Gov. Rick Perry leads the Republican primary field despite 46 percent of respondents not recognizing his name. However, every Republican except Sarah Palin would handily beat the president for the state’s nine electoral votes.

The Center conducted the survey of 841 registered voters on separate dates in July and August.

Over 59 percent of those polled gave President Obama “unfavorable” or “very unfavorable” grades. 52 percent said they were “somewhat dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” with the direction of the country, and 64 percent rated the country’s economic prospects as “poor.”

...

Palin had a combined unfavorable/very unfavorable rating of 56 percent. In a head-to-head match with Obama, Palin led 44 to 42 percent, with 12 percent undecided. All other GOP candidates led Obama by 5 to 22 points.

BTW, CSRC is a good Alabama pollster.

They predicted McCain+20, McCain won by 22.

They also predicted Bentley+13, Bentley won by 16.

And in 2004, they had Bush leading Kerry by 24 points, Bush won by 25.

And in 2000, they had Bush winning by 15, Bush won by 15.

Because the poll is conducted by a labor union (special-interest group) I could not use it even if it had other hallmarks of a valid poll.

It looks as if Alabama voters are extreme "low-information" voters on the whole.

What ?

It is not conducted by the AEA, but by the CSRC.

And as I have noted, the CSRC polls are very accurate.

What interest would a union have in conducting a GOP primary poll ?

I will of course use them in my map, when they are posted on the website.

The poll said Palin would get 44.6 percent of the vote against Obama in Alabama, but because of the margin of error, the result is a statistical tie or even a slight Obama advantage. Palin was the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee.

With or without her in the mix, Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney both would handily beat Obama in Alabama. Romney would get 55.8 percent to Obama’s 33.9 percent while Perry would beat Obama 52.1 percent to 34.6 percent.

(Michelle Bachmann is not shown in this poll; I figure that she would do about as badly as Sarah Palin. I am keeping her on my maps until she drops out outright, which she probably will do when she finds her Congressional seat in danger or if her campaign goes bankrupt)

Obama vs. Romney

Obama vs. Bachmann

Obama vs. Palin

Obama vs. Perry

Polls are continuing to go against the claims Romney would do worse than other Republicans in keeping the South.
