Progressives are the left wing of the party. They can be further divided into those more into fiscal left-wing politics (Midwestern, Southern, and Northeastern progressives) or social liberalism (Western progressives). Overall, however, they tend to be more generally liberal as opposed to specific focus on an issue. Modern examples include Russ Feingold, Howard Dean, and Al Franken.

Standard liberals, as I like to call them, are in the center of the party's politics, and where most presidential nominees come from. Modern examples include John Kerry, Barack Obama (in the campaign at least), and Chuck Schumer.

New Democrats, brought to greater influence by the Clinton administration, are socially liberal and fiscally moderate. They pull extra support from some minority groups, women, and gays, while losing support from the WWC. Examples include Bill Clinton, Andrew Cuomo, and Gary Hart.

Blue Dogs are the most conservative Democrats who can seriously be considered Democrats. Fiscally and socially moderate to conservative, often with a populist streak, they put off Northern and Western liberals but can be strong in the South and parts of the Rustbelt. Examples include Mike Beebe, Joe Manchin, and Ben Nelson.

I'll do a category for the GOP, which will be a little more complex than the left-right thing.

When you do the Pubbies, please consider making a box for what I call a Cameron (Tory)  Pubbie, because that best describes me.  I consider myself more pragmatic than ideological. These days ideology I think interferes all too often with clear thinking. JMO.

Standard liberal.  I consider myself somewhat of a mix between progressives and New Democrats.

Basically, I support a few moderate policies, but I'm also unwilling to compromise on my liberal positions if it means sacrificing the middle-class (i.e. tax cuts for the rich).

Progressives.

Blue Dogs and New Democrats are former moderate Republicans who have been pushed out of their party. I don't have a fond view of them.

Strictly speaking, I'm not a Democrat, but I'll answer since I typically vote Democratic on the national level. I'm a Progressive of the Northeastern, fiscally left-wing mold, socially center-left.

Republicans who used to be Blue Dogs are common. Blue Dogs who used to be Republican are not.

I can think of a few. Gabby Giffords, Loretta Sanchez.

Since I have identified myself historically as a Blue Dog, I guess I'll put myself down as one.

Though, if you look at my positions on the issues (the link is in my sig if you click on it) I am certainly more economically liberal than most Blue Dogs, as well as more socially conservative (or states-rights oriented) and hawkish than other more liberal Democrats.

That's essentially the dilemma I'm in.

You're a Democrat?

I'm an independent, and am free to select my primary ballot in New Mexico, so I have a choice in both parties.

I identify both as a socialist and a pragmatist.  For the purpose of this poll, 'progressive', though I am probably more inclined to vote for 'standard liberals' in a Democratic primary (especially on a national scale).
