he was no conservative. what conservative says that military spending is robbing from the starving poor? He also ended the Korean War, established the Interstate system, stood up to Orval Faubus, helped put an end to McCarthy and signed America's first Civil Rights law.

it's actually true from every election from 1940-1956. I liked Dewey too. Then Republicans started getting so crappy in the 60s and beyond.

Definitely 1948.
Maybe 1904. Don't know enough about Parker.
Definitely 1844.

And that's it.

1948
1924  (NOT including LaFollette--well, maybe John W. Davis wasn't really of Presidential caliber, but ah well...)
1904
1880
1836
1812 (maybe)
1800
1796

Lowering the standard to "good": 1976.
I'm not sure where "great" begins...maybe 1860, counting only the Northern candidates.

Davis was ranked Above Average for Presidential Losers... Oh, I wouldn't have been too sad about Bob Dole. He seemed like a nice guy to me, Don't get me wrong though, I still wanted Clinton.

Not sure, depends on the threshold for great. But, yeah, the 40s and 50s had decent candidates.

E. Harold Munn was the Prohibtion nominee in 1968 if I have my history right. So Mr. Toxell was the Constitution party nominee.
