It's a flower worn at this time of year in Britain and parts of the commonwealth in rememberance of those who died in war, particularly the Great war, and the symbol was chosen because of the prominence of the blood red poppy flower in the fields of Flanders, immortalised in the Empire's imagination by a Canadian poet and medic.
