The year is 2020 and it's election time again.

First, let's take a lot at what's happened since 2011.

In 2012, President Barack Obama wins reelection by a comfortable margin against Republican Rick Perry. The House stays Republican while the Democrats by the most narrow of margin manages to retain control of the senate, with each party having 50 seats, and Vice President Biden being the tie breaking vote. During his second term, the economy improves and he leaves office with a 58% approval rating and unemployment at 5,9%

Then in the 2016 election, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo easily wins the Democratic nomination and picks former HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas as his running mate, while Sarah Palin manages to win the Republican nomination by the skin of her teeth. She goes on to win the election by an extremely narrow margin (she wins the electoral vote, but loses the popular vote by 2 points). Her term is a turbulent one, and while the economy keeps doing well, she becomes implicated in a corruption scandal later in her term and she resigns the Presidency in 2019 in favor of her Vice President Scott Brown. He preforms respectably while serving out the remainder of President Palin's term, but he doesn't champion any groundbreaking legislation and as 2020 rolls around, the economy is entering a recession with a spike in unemployment figures (not even close to being as bad as 2008- recession, but still nothing you can just ignore).

Brown is nominated for reelection despite a primary challenge from Congressman Rand Paul, and he picks Senator Marco Rubio of Florida as his running mate in order to shore up conservative voters. Meanwhile the Democrats nominate Texas Governor Julian Castro (ascended to the Governorship after winning the 2014 election), who picks California Senator Gavin Newsom as his running mate.
