If you're just answering the thread, yeah, it's probably ok to not read the whole thing before responding.  On the other hand, if you have a question you might want to see if anybody else had the same question as you or you might end up asking a question that was answered in the post immediately before yours.

Yeah, that might happen once every 50 times - and it was this time. The likelihood of that wasn't too high though.
