More like "old southern men". And because the GOP folks are 95% white, "old white southern men".

Probably a form of white guilt. Former clan members and sympathisers in the 60s who now think: "Hey, we were once so mean to these black folks, but they are actually pretty cool and folksy and business-minded and they hate the Muslims, so let's make up for it and vote for one."

Meh, I'd say it's a bit reductive to say that all older white men in the South are "Former clan members and sympathisers".

Btw, I don't actually think you can infer much about the age distribution of Cain's supporters from this, because the # of respondents under 40 is so small, and those in the 40-64 and 65+ categories support him in nearly equal numbers.

OTOH, Quinnipiac also has Cain doing best among olds.

Romney is actually more unknown now than he was in October 2007.  Or perhaps people just have bigger things on their minds these days, and can't bring themselves to care about the presidential candidates:
