I like the home poojas many women still do in the morning. Quiet little private affairs.
New and/or small Hindu temples always felt like pure moneythieving enterprises with little to no spiritual aura to me. But maybe I'm biased. Some of the large old places though are wonderful.

Those new Hindu temples have moved too far to the right.  How can we get them to moderate back to what they were like in the 1970s?

What factors would push the temples back to the center?  Back to when you had Rockefeller Hindus worshiping there?

We need to combat Hindutva ideology, or at least its promotion in temples; and Sanskritization, or rather half-assed half-understood Sanskritization as would appeal to an OBC Nouveau Riche.

Conversion to Islam isn't reform of any sort.

Shua is correct, Buddhism is the only reasonable religion. India should become 80% Buddhist.

And everyone should go to Durga Puja high at least once, preferably in Calcutta. And Shiv Ratri goes without saying.

It's strange how India alone retained paganism, when all the other lands that were under Muslim rule for a prolonged time became Muslim. Modern rationalistic Hinduism reminds me of the Neoplatonism of Julian the Apostate. He was a fascinating man.

What fascinates me more is why Bengal became so Muslim. Of course Bengal had Muslim rulers, but so did the rest of North India. Why didn't Bihar or Uttar Pradesh become so Muslim? Why was East Bengal always more Muslim than the west? And of course Islam also came through the way of trade to south India. Yet it didn't spread much beyond Kerala. Same with Christianity in Kerala, though later the Portuguese helped spread it up the west coast. Kerala has been a multicultural place for thousands of years. Pretty cool.

The story is that Shah Jalal came to Sylhet because it was there that the soil was like that of his home in Yemen. It's an interesting thought, though. Certainly Kerala is the best part of India.
